So they are the same. I thought I was goofy for thinking they might be. 😋

Yes, Greg is correct. Hirta did change to globiferum. We made that change a couple of years ago.
Great thing about this database is if you type in sempervivum hirta for the search it will give you the correct entries under globiferum.

I think it is time to visit this thread again. I have slowly been spring cleaning the raised beds, and find that the rollers seem to be impervious to all this crazy weather we have had so far this winter. I am finding no signs of stress, rot, or any other problems with them.
Here is a photo taken today of 'Olympicum'. I love the cilia along the leaves, makes such a nice contrast with the leaf colors.

Actually this one was not cleaned up. You can see a few old dead leaves in the photo. This is how it came through the winter. One tough and beautiful plant.

When they mature into a large colony it is a lovely sight to see. Especially in a rock garden like you have Dirt. Smiling

They sure do get redder in the winter.
I wonder if they have contractile roots for uprighting themselves.

Now that is an interesting thought Tim. Let's see if Kevin can answer it.

Not sure on the mechanism Tim, but I'd be more willing to bet on the growth of the single tap root as being the contactile one. The other roots aren't substantive enough.

Agreed. Furthermore, I have yet to see the crazy weather rot one of these guys. They seem rot-proof.

Its comments like these that cause a run on the sales of rollers at the nearby nurseries that carry Jovibarba rollers... Sighing!

I'm still not the rollers biggest fan (just trying to slow down sales Bev!!) as they all look like rollers! There's not as much genetic and phenotypic diversity to keep me happy. I have saved some seedlings that are a bit different in shape or color but I'm unsure if any will ever get a name. Maybe this next seedling crop will make me eat my words. They don't bloom as often so it's hard to breed towards an objective when you might not get bloom on a seedling roller for 4-5 years. My other complaint is that they RUN. I can't imagine my neat freak friend Tim tolerating that!

Guess I still have in my head Helen's statement" "Kevin those rollers don't sell!"

I think they are good for EXTREME places as they can root in the least bit of soil and grow.

Well, I like 'em and the way they roll Smiling
I have had them dry up and shrivel away though, in some really extreme spots, so they're not what I would call bulletproof in the desert

Dude... you've done it now... I read this while sipping my vodka and lime. The gloves are off now. Didn't I just say rollers were like my tots fave semp...? Hilarious!
I agree the color diversity, or form for that matter, isn't there. Time for breeders to step up to the challenge. I've seen some tangerine orange and olive green varieties somewhere but I can't find them now. Confused There are too, too many green-with-red-tip varieties out there, completely indistinguishable. I was looking forward to getting 'Autumn Fire' from Wolfgang... but... Sighing! . He also seems to have some yellows that are way better than anything we have over here and I would love to get ahold of some of those.
I want to see what comes out of your (Kevin's) 'Autumn Fire' and 'Limette' seeds. Even if they turn out nothing new. Seems like we're lacking sufficient breeding stock over on this side of the pond. Or is that incorrect?
