CarolHB said:Not just planting the seeds, but buying them. I decided I wanted white in the front yard so went to Select Seeds and bought about a dozen packets of white stuff and figured something would work, so just start them all and see what happens. All the designing books and mags talk about making a plan. I have a plan. I plan to make it up as I go along and love every teensy nanosecond of it. HA!

Carol, I garden like you do. Plants, seedlings, seeds I buy them all and figure out where they will end up later. So I'm constantly planning as I go along. When I buy, I usually have a general idea, but an exact plan in mind. No, I plan on planting, and if a plant doesn't work out for whatever reason, I'll move it and replace it with something else. That's part of the fun of gardening.

Yeah, @Deebie, altho I do understand the value of a plan. It will tell me exactly what's going wrong. But I can see that for myself just by looking out the window.

Well, really -- there's nothing wrong with planting stuff and then moving it around later!

I've gardened for many years, and moving plants around is normal! I'm always searching for the perfect place for a plant.

Exactly! and how can we be expected to know if we have the perfect plant until we actually grow it... Confused

Well over 75 % of the plants in my garden now (~ 60 + plants) are "rescues" mostly from Lowes where I get them for 75 or more % off. I check once a week or so. Last year at end of season I missed most of their blow out all plants for 1 or 2 $ each. I bought 12 plants for 13 $

Last years rescues includes some non plant items

125 $ arbor for 27 $
97 $ fountain for 18 $

White Bird of Paradise, Bay tree, Hardy Kiwi were some of my rescues - all 3 together < 50 $

There is nothing marked down at my store yet. I keep waiting. I'm thinking now that they will start this week.

Anyone in the Kansas City area? I visited heartland nursery and garden center today. Oh, my..........it almost caused my heart to stop!!!!!!! An unlimited purse would have been great but mine was limited. LOL. My intent was to look for a trumpet vine to plant by the power pole we had to relocate to our landscaped area that we removed all that cement that was left after our fire from a year ago. I scored a nice one, about 2 feet tall. A double purple/white datura jumped,in the cart before I could stop it, as did a monsterous EE bulb.....a variety I didn't have, but the name escapes me. That sucker set me back $25.99, but I have good luck with bulbs so it will be ok.

It was almost insulting to me to have purchased so little..... Rolling on the floor laughing

Anna, I've seen some really amazing EEs, hope it proves worthy of the price. Surely it will.

I want three small gift flowers for Wednesday- going to stop at Lowes this morning, check out the mothers day leftovers and what may be left after what must have been a VERY Very busy weekend for the store. I hope they'll have had time to make markdowns. Wish me luck! I'm walking slow already after spending all day in the garden yesterday.
Plant it and they will come.

I've gone to Walmart several times to see if they would mark down some annuals I had really wanted but were near death (knew that they could be rescued with a little TLC) but was told "No." I then asked to speak with the manager of the garden dept. and this person told me no. I then flat out told the person that they would never get anyone to buy the plant at the full price they were asking. Why wouldn't you (WM) take some money rather than take a complete loss? He just said he couldn't and I left the store shaking my head. Sad Sighing!

Well, that must have been frustrating.

No great luck at my Lowes. I did buy three Gerberas with a few buds left, only to get the bright plastic cover pot and appropriately sized inner pot. I'll use them at work.
Plant it and they will come.

As a result of reading this thread I took a look at the sale rack at HD last time I was there and it was so scary I just walked away. Those plants were in really bad shape. I didn't even look at what was there, just ran away. Next time I'll try to get a little closer, or maybe go back to Lowe's which is just a little further down the street. I went to that Lowe's (once) and just did not like the layout, or the rude employee, and felt really uncomfortable. I could try it again, I guess (once).

I asked for a markdown on plants in bad shape somewhere--I don't remember where, and the manager said no because they get credit for such plants from the supplier.

I found some artemisia 'powis castle' buried under a load of other plants at one nursery, looking pretty sad. Asked about a discount for a "rescue buy". NO. They get those plants on consignment, so don't have to pay for them unless they sell. The rest get returned and there must be a financial advantage there, o/w they'd discount. That one guy said he didn't care what happened to them as long as they were all consignment plants. I don't go there anymore.
