thanks, Gigi. I have enough purple foliage, and purple doesn't show up that well in shade, I once had Alabama Sunset coleus, and that did very well in the pot by the mailbox where this is now. That one varied its color at times (sun/shade?} nicely, and I'm curious to see how this one does. https://www.sedanfloral.com/Pl....

I've just cut back my work hours and I have been treating myself to a few more annuals while supporting independant nurseries. By releiving them of a few stragglers Hilarious!
Plant it and they will come.

Sally, how pretty! I wonder if you can take cuttings from Vinca and overwinter them the way you can with coleus... That one would be worth keeping and propagating!

Sally, I did a quick search, and it looks like vinca cuttings will root in either water or potting mix. Take 2-3" tip cuttings from "actively growing" plants (maybe earlier in fall rather than just before frost), removing at least one set of leaves and leaving 2 pairs of leaves at the tip. Pinch out any flowers or buds. Rooting hormone seems to be optional. If you root in water, move to potting mix when roots are 1" long. Basically, it's the same instructions you've seen/tried before.

How to make a good bargain even better... multiply one plant into many!

I might try that. The coleus too, since it wasn't readily available.
Plant it and they will come.

Coleus seemed not very plentiful this spring and I hadnt found what I wanted till now.

I found the same situation in my area as well... plants I normally can get mid-May or June 1st just weren't available. They're coming in now, which doesn't do much good when planters are already done with other substitutes. But that's also one of my favorite coleus, I dug out another one to put that one in its usual spot.

It's not just coleus either. A pink Nemesia I like just isn't anywhere (they bloom until a hard frost), and my favorite alyssum, the Proven Winners Snow Princess (it can grow up to 4' cascading down planters, it's the biggest one and I love it), finally came in at the end of June but in these huge pots... not something to use in a mixed planter where they grow into the space. So I settled for a few smaller types. And even the Sweet Carolina Potato Vine wasn't to be found anywhere, only the bigger leafed Margarite.

So I had to settle for other choices for quite a few planters. And in waiting for more stock to come in hoping for what I wanted, the ones I did buy stayed in their little pots much longer than I would have liked. Not sure how to plan around that if it happens next year.

I've actually thought of overwintering things like the special salvias, things I have to order online. But you don't expect one of the most common alyssums or coleus that you buy every year as long as you can remember not being easily available. I don't think I'd have enough room to overwinter as many plants as I'd want to play it safe under those situations.

I tuck coleus and similar things into any available spaces in hanging baskets or around the base of larger plants. One or two plants will give you plenty of cuttings to start in early spring.

I have zero room for any plants staying after school, but as of last week most of the main garden shops, i.e. box store, were still regular season, not after innings.

Probably gone but if I had the bucks, I would look for some perennial flowers.

Phil, maybe too dry & not enough light? I would put that in the ground and see what happens, after a couple weeks of acclimating to more light.

Rescued this pretty orchid from Kroger's yesterday. Been wanting this color Phalaenopsis and the roots look great. Only $4.08.

I put a few coleus in several planters, and yes, they definitely need daily watering even in Zone 5. Which is why I love my drip system connected to every container.
