My purslane is blooming...is this just the oddest winter? The blooms are teeny but still, it is amazing me that it never died back.

Yes, that IS amazing! Actually, mine don't look dead, but they are not in good shape and could still die.

Hi everyone! So here is my purslane! I used to call it my noid snaky succulent, kept crawling out of its containers, but have always loved its vibrant pink flowers when it starts getting warm to very hot in our area. With may thanks to Calif_Sue for the ID she gave at the cacti and succulent forum Big Grin The complete ID she gave is: Calandrinia spectabilis or Rock Purslane

Here is the little purslane in Feb 2010:
Thumb of 2012-02-17/tarev/55bcce

Then I have re-potted her together with another noid succulent which was later ID as Graptoveria Fred Ives (the taller succulent), this photo on Apr 2010. This vibrant purslane really took off and thrived after being repotted:

Come June 2010 a very nice bloom coming from the Purslane:

Close-up of the bloom:

Right now, this purslane/graptoveria container is just so unruly, snaking out of the container..now that I know more about the plant culture of purslane, the better I can handle her blooms come summer Big Grin

Oh happy PURSLANE days are coming soon! Hurray!

Here is a web site selling Portulaca (Purslane) seeds. Don't be fooled, they call the first few offering as Portulaca but they are what we call purslane.
AND look !!!!!! The portulaca is amazing....there is some that look like peppermint too!

We had a surprise cold front roll through on Sunday and Monday. This little hummer was all fluffed up trying to stay warm I guess. He's on my purslane that is a little wilted looking but it will soon thrive again with heat on its way.

I just found out that all the Rio series purslanes listed in the database have Moss Rose as the common name. I'm going to try to add Purslane, which sounds better to me. Not sure which color this one should really be called. It's not 'Rio Scarlet', which is what the label says. The labels are often off on those.

I noticed that too, Linda. It is one of those potato-potaaaaato things. Moss Rose is a name given to both purslane and portulaca at nurseries and the data base people must have liked that. As for me: I don't.

Okay, the Rio series is done. It's simple to add another common plant name! Of course, it has to be approved, but then you can click by the one you want to show up. The orange Rio plant I bought turned out to be not even be a Rio type flower...it's small and not pretty. Darn!
