Soooooooo, here I am the purslane knowledge expert ( Whistling sorta-kinda) and I could'nt find out why my purslane wouldn't bloom. I finally googled it and it's sadly getting too much shade! They like at least 6 hours of sun...more is better. My current home is an apartments since I'm going back to school. I have a balcony that faces east. ALAS! So now I know.

So...morning sun! I'm moving my baskets back to the front yard (west exposure) now that the worst of the heat is over. We've got clouds now, some slight chances of rain...parts of San Antonio already had rain today.

My purslane is blooming again! it's getting more sun as the sun travels to the south.

Have you all stopped to look at the way Dave has set up the forum here yet? Do it! Big Grin He shows photos of purslane and portulaca that have been added to the data base.

Mine isn't doing a full blooms but I'll take the few it's offering. One winter I brought mine inside and placed it in a sunny window. It actually bloomed!

Mine never stopped blooming completely. They're not blooming a lot now, maybe because there's been some cool nights. And we're forecast to have a couple of nights in the mid-40's this week. Am enjoying the increased blooming of other plants after our rain a week ago! Thanks for pointing out those pics featured on the forum page, Becky. Beautiful! Hurray!

Mine has been slowing down. I have been trying to get seeds from it, but that does not seem to be an easy task.....

We have had a fairly mild wintr in Phoenix, with no freezes (yet). I have two baskets of purslane on the patio and one offers a little bloom every once in a while but neither have died. The leaves are healthy looking and gree. This is a first for me! Green Grin!

My purslane and portulaca seeds came last week. I've grown portulaca seed very successfully but have never tried purslane and everything Ive read and heard, it's very difficult to grow from seed. Stay tuned...

Don't cover them, Vic, I think they need light to grow but you may look it up to be sure.

I grew Purslane from seed last summer- I scattered the seed into a hanging basket and I scattered some on the ground. I lightly covered the seed. The seed in the basket flowered before the seed on the ground - I am wondering if that is because the soil in the basket warms up before the ground.

Let us know.

Also - Wondering if anybody has any purslane or portulaca seed to trade....

Thanks for the info Carolyn!

This is the first year I"ve even seen Purslane seed for sale and I ordered it online from Park Seed.

I rarely buy Portulaca because it reseeds so well here but I know it's available about everywhere.

That said, I'll see what I can do to collect seeds for you this season. Thumbs up

Thank you. I was going to take seed from the purslane I grew last year, but it seems the only 'real' snow we got was in October.

I will check out Park Seed.
