So I am back from the St. Louis show. We had a great time. Our society had 2 orchids pulled for AOS consideration. Dendrobium Sherry Abe 'Myzina' AM/AOS was awarded 80 points. Exhibited by MOS member who is so excited about the award.
And I was really excited that they pulled my Epc. Rene Marques 'Flame Thrower' HCC/AOS for consideration for an Award upgrade. Not there on flower count yet, but maybe in a year or two. It is an excellent example of the clone.
I got three blues for my Vandaceous plants (no up close photos this time - I got side-tracked).
Elaine, great tip about the wet towel...I would never had thought to do that!
Melissa, love those 2 pictures..I got to clerk for the judges this fall at the Tampa Orchid Show..it was fun and I learned so much that day. They pulled 7 plants for consideration and ended up giving an award to one of them ..Bulb. mastersianum 'Pumpkin Parachute'
It was so cool to see all the judges scrutinizing every little detail.
Happy Mardi Gras back. Reminds me of the years I lived in Cologne, that city rocks for days around Carneval! You finally get to sleep on Thursday!
Heh, that is a nice one, Lindsey!
I took some pictures today -
The Blc /Rhyncattleyanthe Dan O'Neil 'Jubilee' starts up, I see a couple very tight spikes in the works.
There is the Ascofinetia /Vanda Moonlight Firefly, that spike took positively forever to start opening.
And I have two very old plants of Pleurothallis tripterantha. They are happy campers as long as one inspects them often for Mealies. Looking ok this Winter and they are both rebounding.
I'm on the MG desk this morning. Yesterday, we had very strong winds and my large male papaya tree blew down, blocking the front door. They don't have much of a root system and those big leaves catch the wind. I'll have to look for another one as the female tree by itself isn't going to produce.

Well, I think the politically correct (or plant correct?) name is simply "bi-sexual". It makes a mixture of flower types, including male, female and "perfect" flowers.

In the meanwhile - my Phrag Jason Fischer starts up again. I just snapped off two long stalks with increasingly smaller and sometimes misformed blooms, but the new spike shows a nice and clean bloom. I am growing this one since ca 2005 and it is a decent size clump.
Elaine, I believe they are caused by too high temperatures. The blooms on this one always look better at cooler temperatures. Perhaps when the buds are pushed too much, they might "run out of ingredients"?
