I have only noticed rot in late spring and summer here. Maybe the pathogens need warmth to be active?

There are some "cold weather" fungal "rots", and some " warm weather" fugal ones, as well...the "bacterial soft rot" (the one that really stinks !) seems to like the warm, humid times, here. Since I don't "do" seedlings, I'm not sure if , by being seedlings rather than full sized plants, they are more prone to one kind of disease over another Shrug!

Thanks, Charriet. That may be the nudge I need to get those beds tilled!

I haven't seen you here before, but I may have missed your posts. If you're new, welcome! Welcome!

I was going to post some of my new seeds parents I'll be crossing,but... Due to not having full pedigree of crosses till this winter if then and not feeling like asking permission to post the personally gifted pics. I wish they were watermarked, but we compiled solely for my imagination. In time I'm sure I'll get more info and permission and then I'll post some.

I always make a big list during the winter of the ones I'm wanting to cross, but then spring comes and either some of them don't bloom, or don't bloom at the right time, and my plans go out the window. D'Oh!

I have tried to get around that by storing pollen from some of my late TBs in the freezer. Just hope it will prove viable... Crossing Fingers!

What are some hybridizers' no no's?

I know Lucy mentioned the selling/sharing of seedlings. Should they only be shared with gardens for eval/test purposes? Can they be shared with other hybridizers for cross purposes? I mean alot of crosses out there are made from other's seedlings Confused

What else?

Share for use or testing I agree. Sometimes it is the pollen, not the plant which is shared.

Giving them a name that is the same as another one, but not registering it and selling it as that name. I have found that happens in the daylilies some. Really messes things up.

I can't keep up with daylilies. I have a few, but their a dime a dozen if feel. That's pretty low to not register IF naming though.

One if my pet peeves is assuming all adult blooming irises are NOIDS and searching for a name, finding an iris that looks a great deal like it, accepting that the subtle differences are due to different growing areas and giving it that irises name. There are so many lovely NOIDS that have never been registered or named. I have never planted seeds in my garden and always take off the seed pods. Even with my diligence I have four little seedlings that came up in the beds. These were about a half inch high and 4-5 inches from a rhizome with just iris tops and a little nub where the rhizome would develop. If I had left them to develop I could actually say no seeds had ever been planted there so they must be a named iris someone had gifted me with. One is a ruffly dwarf yellow and I am sure I could find a current iris that looks similar and attach that name. I think a lot of our NOIDS that we strive to find names for should be loved for what they are and not necessarily given an existing irises name. I always like to read from the experienced iris growers on here that you must research and then grow your questionable iris next to the named variety before tagging the name on the stranger. Just my two cents worth but I cringe when I read words like "close enough, I'll put that name on it until I find out differently' when the iris seems so close with just a different colored beard. What???... (Getting off my soap box now)

Great soapbox & so true especially for the older irises.

I agree So many are so similar I think it would require DNA testing to truly be sure of ID.

The first one we should test is Tom's World Famous Red NoID - would really like to know if it's a named cultivar or a very lucky random seedling!

Today is the 4th and last day of the tea treatment to my seeds. Tomorrow I'll plant them in pots and wait to see what happens. The article about this treatment says germination can occur in just a few weeks! Crossing Fingers!
