Do you suppose if you grew a cutting from that branch you would have a whole bush of them?

Theoretically, I should be able to, Porkpal, but this rose is so unstable. It started out as Abracadabra, which is a sport of Hocus Pocus, which is a sport of Black Beauty, which is a sport of Frisco, a solid-yellow rose, so that's what's giving this bloom its odd coloring, I suspect.

Given the erratic performance of this rose and how it doesn't know what it's supposed to be, I think you should name it "Sybil."

Here's how it looks today. It really confuses the poor camera, which can't seem to focus on both halves. One always turns out slightly fuzzy.

Here's a picture of three blooms on the bush, all different. Entertaining doesn't begin to cover it. You'll have to click on this one to see all three.

Maybe it's just the heat of Indian summer that's causing these "mutations." Memphis Music has lost its yellow stripes and only has a few white ones.

Pumpkin Patch also looks completely different from usual (better, in my opinion).

And here's another of my prized potted plants:

That rose bush is SO cool! Keep us posted on its performance.

That last potted plant looks to need repotting to a larger size.

I just love that rose, Zuzu! And I wish you could somehow capture that half-&-half sport! That would be pretty snazzy if a certain amount of your blooms looked like that -- I'm sure it would be a hit with a whole bunch of people!

Is ROSA MUNDI the striped one that sometimes comes out half-&-half like yours? Or am I thinking of another? If it is ROSA MUNDI, you could name yours ROSA TUESDI! Big Grin Rolling on the floor laughing

Rosa Tuesdi! How cute!

I've seen blooms on Winchester Cathedral that are half white and half pink. It's a sport of Mary Rose, so it's always threatening to revert.

Here's a pretty mystery rose I need some help with. It was supposed to be Potton Heritage, a red-blend hybrid tea, but it immediately put out long, long canes that are now about 6 feet tall in just a couple of months. It's clearly a climber, has fairly large blooms (4 inches), and has 7-leaflet and 5-leaflet leaves, in contrast to the usual 5-leaflet and 3-leaflet arrangement. This is how it looks from the front:

Thumb of 2011-09-28/zuzu/7f6200

It has a darker reverse, and the canes are quite pliable, so the heavy blooms droop like this:

Oh, and here's another clue: My pretty mystery rose smells great! I'd categorize it as moderate and fruity-spicy.

WOW all lovely!
Mike what kind of setting/lens are you using or are you using soft effects on your pics? JUST GORGEOUS!

Just want to say my newbie Buck rose "Aunt Honey" really was a stand out with VERY long lasting blossoms. Just ordinary pink, with rather large fluffy blossoms she bloomed non-stop all summer. Very long lasting blossoms, typical Hybrid Tea bush form.
Sorry I didn't take more pics of her.

Gorgeous shots Vicky, love the tomato and rose one the best!! and the kitty one of course. I loved Zuzu's potted plant one too, forgot to mention it. Wondered what plant was being sacrificed for her kitty's resting spot. Hilarious!

Vicky: You must have directed the photo lens setting question to the Mike from New York. My photo's are strictly "auto focus' all the way and don't hold a candle to HIS ! I know zilch about photography. Hilarious!

That look on your cat's face is priceless ! Love your mums.

It was built in 1929. I think they call them "coffered" ceilings. It's like a giant picture frame in the middle of the ceiling with that molding around it. There's molding (sp???) everywhere in here. The walls aren't that bluish green...more like the green in the options here below where it says "upload image" etc.
I'll take some more pics. of the inside, but it's really hard to do. This room is on the north side and gets no sunlight. If I turn the sconces on, it messes up the photo.

The pic makes it look like the corner of the room is curved. Your antiques fit beautifully in there.

Vicky,

Thanks for your feedback. Those photos were all taken with one of two lenses I use in the garden: the Canon 28-70mm macro L lens (shown here), and the Canon 100mm macro lens, mounted on a Canon 5D II camera. I used a tripod with the camera's mirror locked up, and exposures set on a two second delay after pressing the shutter release, so that there was no camera shake to blur the images when each photo was taken. The 28-70mm lens is probably the most versatile lens I own (and an older one at that, since it has been "replaced" by Canon's newer 24-70mm L lens). This lens is typically used for portraits and group shots (sometimes known as the wedding photographer's lens), or for moderately wide angle landscape shots, and is far less commonly used for macro work. But it's actually built (and labeled) for macro photography, and due to its zoom range I find it provides greater versatility in the garden than my Canon 100mm fixed focal range "dedicated" macro lens. I find myself using it just about everywhere I go - except for bird photography, when I pull out the big guns (the 400mm and 500mm lenses that reach nearly a foot and a half in length!) I also manually fine tune the auto focus for each shot, by enlarging the image on the LED screen so that I can see details, and turning the focus ring just ever so slightly to get the exact focus I want. Then I use a two-step sharpening procedure in Photoshop to achieve the clarity and crispness I want for each shot. Sometimes I'll darken the backgrounds, but since I do a lot of my photography in late afternoon semi-shade, the dark backgrounds typically happen on their own! Later afternoon light eliminates white-out glare (also known as clipped white balance), but it also sometimes leaves my leaves with a somewhat "bluish" hue which I occasionally have to correct so that they appear as green in the image as they do to the human eye when looking at the same scene in person.

BTW, I love your orb web photograph. Is there dew on the silk threads, making them more visible than would otherwise be the case? I have a lot of these webs all over the garden at this time of the year. I enjoy photographing them with morning dew on them if they haven't been too torn up the previous night by flying insects. I have about 6 of them right now, and call all my spiders "Sylvia", and know where each one lives.
