My iris are certainly behind those in KY and TX. Not a one looks like they want to bloom any time soon. I look at the size of the fans of those opening in Cali - wow. I need some super food or something because - with the exception of some Burseens - my fans are pretty short still.

Leslie, reticulatas would probably be in full bloom in your zone- I highly recommend them! Nothing beats the winter blues better than a sweet little early blooming iris!

I saw a lot of stalks coming in the rebloomer bed. Plus a few more in the median bed and the aril bed.

Lots of healthy growth but no stalks, which might be a good thing right now with lots of rain coming.

What do "pregnant stalks" look like as opposed to not-pregnant stalks?

No, they are pregnant 'fans' not pregnant stalks. That's where the stalk is forming but hasn't poked it's way out of the fan. It makes the fans have a pregnant bulge.

The bulge begins as a thickness very near the rhizome in the heart, or center, of the fan. The stalk will grow and eventually emerge from the fan. On a clump you should have some thin fans, no thicker than the several leaves together, and some fans will start to fatten near the rhizome. The ones that are showing the fat bump are the rhizomes that will bloom this year.

Boy is that LA early! Extremely early. They usually bloom late in the TB season .

Another way to see if your fans are pregoers is to look at them looking towards the sunlight, the shadow or siloutte side. You can sometimes see through it. Does that make sense Confused I'd take a pic, but the sun took a nap already....or what Bonnie said Thumbs up
Gimme it and I'll grow it!
