Short for Schomburgkia. The former name of Myrmecophilas was Schomburgkia. Our own orchidwiz, Jim, who loves telling us all the complicated new names for our favorite flowers still likes to call them Schomburgkia because it rolls off the tongue so well. (and also because I guess Dr. Richard Schomburgk was a famous German botanist as Daisy pointed out earlier).

I know............just was asking tongue-in-cheek. I have to spend time changing my labels. That chore never seems to end.

I just make a note in my book that the name has changed. I don't want to stress my plants by making them pronounce and memorize even more unpronounceable names that will change next week anyway. Blinking

As far as changing all your labels, Ken, why bother? Nobody else seems to be. Even growers selling at shows have the old names on most of their plants here. If you get them from your wholesaler with the old names, I say leave 'em.

If you have a customer who is serious enough to want to show their plant (in a few years when they're big enough) they will also be knowledgeable enough to re-label it themselves. If you just put the alternate (new) names on your website entries - and I'd put the old names on there too, for those of us who don't know or care about the new ones - that should make everyone happy.

I mean, really, how many of us knew what a Rmy. was before Jim looked it up on OrchidWiz? Now . . . I'm going to have to go back a page and find what he said it was, since I've slept since then . . . Rolling my eyes. Rhynchosomethingorother? It's in the same vein as Whattheheckia, right?

Rolling on the floor laughing I know you are right, Elaine. Having the correct name is a genetic trait I guess. Whistling I usually do put the correct name and then the "old" name in parenthesis, so I guess that might be enough.

this whole thread needs to go into quarantine....sounds like a lot of serious illness that could be contagious ..someone, please pass the daconil wipes.

I know Jim has been busy as all get out because he hasn't yet volunteered that all 4 of the plants I got this weekend are mis tagged! Hilarious!

Thanks for the reminder, Lindsey. Go look on the other thread. The good news is that only 3 out of the 4 were wrong.

Carol, nice show but I really love your Vuylstekeara. Unfortunately, it is now Miltonidium Carnivale. They are hard to grow in Florida which is probably why I received the blue ribbon for mine. You are doing a great job with yours. Your Ansellia africana is a species. It is hard to see the flower in your picture but I looked it up and it is a beautiful spotty. Well done.

I'm not usually a big fan of pink, but your Den. Haleahi Blush 'Lake view' is really gorgeous. The spots on the Ansellia are really neat, too.

Thanks, Jim. I can't take credit for the Vuyl/Miltonidium, it was in bud when I bought it. The Ansellia was a pass along several years ago, and is easy and reliable growing in gravel on my porch. I have seen them at shows about 5' tall, but this one stays at about 2'. Unfortunately, it reaches for the sun, so 1 spike goes through the porch railing and the other goes the opposite direction, and it's hard to move for photos. Wish I had your set up so they would grow up, but alas, I don't.

I found a few more bloomers out in the OC so I will continue to catch up. Patty and her half sister will return from Virginia tonight at midnight so I'll be at the airport until the wee hours.

First up is Oncidium Pacific Passage 'Handsome' (Oncidium Masayo Morisada x Oncidium sphacelatum)

Another miss-named Schomburgkia, Caulaelia Star of Rio 'Rose' (Laelia superbiens x Caularthron bicornutum) has been blooming for two months on three 4 foot long spikes.
