Mariposa, I'll get the recently potted extra tomato seedlings into the swap tool soon... then please "dib" them. If I manage to get around to seeding a tray of cherry tom's, I'll do a couple different ones and add the extras to my list. Smiling

Great Critter, thanks!

Aspenhill, good to know on the ostrich fern and I'm just going to assume that you wouldn't mind some Bleeding Heart seedlings along with them...!!! It is a great combination as when my Bleeding Hearts decline the ferns are in their full glory. My ferns grow waist high where I have them.

extra ostrich fern never goes to waste! Great idea combining it with bleeding heart. Maybe I'll see if I can get some seeds and sprinkle around any place with ferns... haven't had much luck getting plants established, but sometimes seedlings adapt better.

Lol Critter! Bleeding Hearts are my best (only) winter sowing success! How about I trade you some BH seedlings for assorted cherry tomato? I learned long ago that Bleeding Hearts do not appreciate being transplanted cause of damage to ftheir fleshy root. That's why I try to pot up seedlings and grow them on for a year or two in a quart or larger pot, thinking I can fool them into thinking they just have more room, rather than they have been moved.! Some of the seedlings may be the white 'alba'. Is that OK?

Maybe @RickM will tell us his experience with Bleeding Hearts amongst the ferns....

Mariposa - I get the idea from your posts that you think you need to actually swap something with the person you are getting a plant from. The functional reality of these "swaps" is that participants bring extra plants and make them available to any takers whether or not they get anything from the other person. It is not uncommon that one may acquire a number of plants from someone who gets nothing from you, or vice versa. Unless you keep your car locked, you will go home with plants whether you bring any or want any more plants or not! Whistling

@MariposaMaid

The bleeding hearts and ferns are coexisting quite nicely. I have a fern bed that's about 10' x 20' full of Lady Fern. There are about 6 bleeding heart a couple of hosta and a couple of trillium in there as well. The bleeding hearts come up nice and tall and do their thing. As they are starting to die back for the summer, the lady fern are reaching above them.

I did have some bleeding hearts planted in pots with hosta 'lancifolia' for the past 7-8 years, but it doesn't look like they survived this past winter. It's odd because this winter was more mild that 2014-15 and they did fine. It could be that the hosta crowded out the BHs. I guess it's time to split those pots as well.

Then again, depending on what survives this weeks' freeze/thaw cycles, I may be starting all over.

@GreenThumb99 ... I've already warned my other half that we will be bringing plants home. Granted, I'm not telling him how many, but I think he suspects. Whistling

ditto to David; I have gotten such a wonderful value from the sharing here, and I think everyone feels the same- somehow we all end up receiving plenty over the years.
Plant it and they will come.

One of the things that really makes me grin about our swaps is seeing how everyone starts talking up the plants that haven't found new owners yet as the get together is winding down nodding I like the pre swap talking and arranging, but I also like the extras that are usually brought as well. Sometimes, seeing something there on the extras table really catches your eye when seeing the item on a list did not. But getting back to the nodding part of what I'm talking about, the good natured used car salesman tactics at the end are really amusing.

Exactly! I don't think anyone has claimed my oakleaf hydrangea yet but I think someone will fall in love with it once they see it in person. Green Grin!

Mariposa Maid: I'll put you down for some crocosmia!! (@Critterologist, can I add the crocosmia now, or is it too late to add plants to my swap list?)

SSG: The oakleaf hydrangea sounds lovely--can I have some? :-)

Critter: I would love some cherry tomatoes, too!!

ssg, I made myself a note that you want some of the mixed Sedum. As soon as I can identify one of the mix, I'll put them on the swap tool for better record keeping.

I saw the oakleaf hydrangea but was trying to exercise restraint... I've been planting a lot of shrubs and understory trees lately, need to pause and evaluate what kind of "spots" remain for tall/short/shade/wet/dry etc. I have one oakleaf hydrangea ('Amethyst', I think) that's doing pretty well in a wet, partial shade spot. It's been there a couple of years now so hopefully will take off soon.

I only have 'Wild Cherry' (a currant type) at present, but I'll try to get some additional cherry types sowed this week. Maybe @NisiNJ has some started? Nisi, did you by chance start any 'Mr. Stripey' tomatoes this year? I found my seeds from you, so I can start some here, but if you've got extras I'll put dibs on 1 or 2! It's one of the sweetest varieties I've grown.

@Catmint 20906 -- not hollering at ya, just making sure everybody knows about adding plants to their lists...

Plants can be added to your "primary swap list" at any time. Just remember to click the check mark -- if it's green, the plant will be added to your offerings for this swap.

HaHaHa Both MAG Robins calling 'dibs' on all 4 kinds of Agastache! Way cool! Now we can have some fun comparing notes on how they do!
Not 100% sure of winter survival of mine, but I'd grow them as 'annuals' cause I really like them and where they fall in the 'something in bloom' spectrum. They are all rated as Hardy for us.

Weather permitting I will be attending an Open House and Native Plant Sale at Chesapeake Natives this Sat. I've been looking for a Button Bush and Purple Milkweed and they have both! They also have an extensive list of plants/trees/shrubs and vines native to the Chesapeake region. They propagate their own plants and call them LEN plants, meaning Local Ecotype Natives. They go to a number of regional plant sales so look for them when you are out and about

Sounds really cool, Mariposa! Wish I were doing better with walking these days.
On the positive side, I now have a dr's Rx for a motorized scooter of my own, and have an appointment to check some out in early May! woohoo! watch out!

Gita - in response to your comments inserted on the "Haves and Wants" thread, Jill did not "start" the new format. I know I raised the possibility on this forum of using the tool for plants swaps, so flame me rather than Jill.
