I do believe the difference is that the guys that do our winter clean up weren't allowed to prune them. In years passed they've been cut way too short and I would have to wait for them to regrow to enjoy the blooms.
Sue, my DH thinks Mayleen is trying to eat the house, LOL. I'll have to prune it when it's done blooming to get rid of some dead stems.
Terri, I grow clematis all over garden, I hope you find some interesting places to place your plants. My Red Star is planted by my mailbox. Other clematis are planted along my fence, Andromeda is in front of, and will be trained to grow through rose Variegata di Bologna in the front, and Kardynal W. will be trained to grow through the back of the rose. Wildfire, Jackmanii and HF Young have been plated at the base of rose Souvenir de la Malmaison on an arbor. Otto Froebel has been planted to grow up an obelisk. There are so many wonderful places to grow these beautiful plants.
Alan, you're going to love Josephine. Niobe is also a wonderful plant. We've had the plant pot in that spot since 2004, that we got from a place called The Pottery, which unfortunately isn't open any more. I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures of you potted clematis in the urns.
