Gorgeous! I have killed 2 Omoshiro... dare I try one more time?
I rarely see clematis at Walmart. The local garden centers have some starting at $30. I usually order from Brushwood, but usually have to order 6 at a time to take advantage of the shipping!

The reverse sides of so many clematises are an additional joy and often overlooked.

Let's hope your third try is the lucky one. Plant deeply, water well, add lots of compost and manure, a handful of bonemeal and a lot of mulch. Good luck.

pirl said:Alan - Walmart is the better choice. Even three years ago it was only desperation that would see me going into a Walmart but it's become a big favorite for me now, maybe due to a big, new, store.

Terri - I'd never turn down a beautiful plant just because it's a NOID. Life is too short to be consumed by having a name for every plant. Clematises are so easy for determining pruning. Right now, a big flowered clem will be a class 2. Don't oversleep tomorrow!

Arlene --- I went to our local Walmart Garden Center today, and it had very rare pickin's for sure.
Nothing was really in the garden center except pansies. No Clematis at all. Not much of anything really. I'll have to try my local Home Depot and see what they have. I need more potting soil anyhow.

They'll be inside, Terri, along with dahlias, hostas, begonias, ferns - all in green plastic bags. As the season progresses new clem's will be outside in tiny pots - around mid May here.

Even Home Depot has all its packaged plants indoors. Outdoors is reserved for shrubs and pansies, blooming bulbs like hyacinths and lilies.

I went back to the local Home Depot early yesterday morning to pick up a few of those clematis that I mentioned. What a difference a day makes!!! On Saturday it was partly sunny and comfortable temps, and the crowds and checkout lines were crazy. Yesterday morning was bitter cold and windy, no crowds at all. They had all the plants covered up with plastic, but the plastic was blowing all over the place. The plastic was only partially covering the clematis so I was able to get at them. Most of the plants were just in the green, but a few had blooms on them. Unfortunately, the noid pretty pink stripey one that I had seen in bloom on Saturday was gone. What I did get were Dr Ruppel and Firworks. While I was picking them out and paying for them at the outdoor cash register, the wind picked up and was at its most bitter for the short 15 minutes I was out there - blowing the plants sideways, hands shaking so much it was hard to slide my debit card LOL.

I noticed the Plant DB photos of Fireworks are really varied. The one I picked up is more of an overall light lavender with very subdued stripe markings - the one posted by victor is the most similar to what mine looks like.

Terri :: I am very envious. Wow. You got some lovely Clematis at Home Depot.
The Home Depot by me does not have any Clematis. I don't know when they will carry them,
probably not until the end of May around here. I hope I can find some really nice ones in bloom.
Thanks for sharing the pics. they are really nice! Smiling

Terri, I hope you enjoy growing your new plants from HD!

Here's my Henryi that came from a small starter plant that was started in a pot in 2014, and planted in the garden in 2015. It's now well over 5 ft on the arbor.

A reason to never give up on clematis. I thought Fleuri was dead, it grew briefly in 2015, then disappeared. I found this at the base of the pot where it's planted with my standard rose Rock and Roll.

The only time I give up is when I empty the pot and nothing is there!
Cameron, maybe your NOID is Daniel Deronda. I think it must be a type 2 because it bloomed so early

Omoshiro is addictive!

Love your Fireworks. It looks just like mine. Other photos show it darker but I like it as you and I have it.

Those Walmart clem's are a bargain. I have several, HF Young and Ville de Lyon.

They're all lovely, Annette.

Omoshiro is on my want list ever since I first saw it from a photo posted by Pirl where it really caught my eye. Fireworks is one of the two clematis I picked up at Home Depot last Sunday, and I did notice after I brought it home and looked it up in Plant Files that it didn't look like most of the photos in there. The striped markings that are so distinct in those db photos and Annette's just posted photo are almost non existent in the HD one. It will be interesting to see if it gets the more distinct markings in new blooms as the plant matures. I'm making a stop at Walmart tomorrow after work and will see if there are any clems to be found Green Grin!

Anyhow, they had:
Nelly Moser

Venosa Violacea
Belle of Woking (talk about differences in color!)
Jackmanii
Ville de Lyon

Beautiful Arlene! I'll have to go check out HD. I plan on going to Lowes, HD and Walmart to see what they have in. I would love to try some more of the starter plants.

Terri, it WAS Arlene's pictures of Omoshiro that inspired me to get it, and I have no regrets. It's a great addition to any garden.

Josephine is doing really well, it's second year in the spot at the base of a rose. Bugs, probably earwigs, are loving it too. Glare
