I , Kurt (not Melanie ) finally caught the true lord of the feeder , yard and perch on camera , perching after chasing the female or juvie male away

I think I lost my "Lord of the feeder" last night. Day before yesterday I went out on the porch for a smoke, and he perched on a begonia leaf 2' from me. I spoke to him, reached around to flip ashes, turned my head, and he just sat there in the shade. Yesterday evening I went out and he was perched on the feeder while another one was nervously feeding. After 10 minutes he hadn't moved, and when I stepped over there he was just sitting, eyes closed. Today, no sign of him. I don't know how long they live, but I think he is a goner.

I keep hoping my hummers will get tired of chasing each and learn to get along , but they haven't yet.

Awww Carol. Sorry about your little hummer maybe he hit a window and was trying to regroup and he'll be back. It makes me sad every time I hear a bird hit a window.

It's not like I'm lacking for hummers! Another has already laid claim to that feeder. I can see at least 6 at any time of the day in my tiny yard...all just waiting their for chance.
Kurt, They will never learn to get along. Sometimes they allow the youngsters to feed, and the females are much more tolerant of each other, but how the males ever get laid is beyond me, as they run off everybody. The only time you see them sharing is during migration when there are too many for them to chase. Then it's like musical chairs on my 6 port feeder...especially at dusk. All ports will be occupied and a couple hovering.

changed all the nectar and added a 3rd feeder today , all out of sight of the other ones and all found and used within 10 minutes.

seemed to help a little as I caught both the mature male and immature male perched well within sight of each under the main feeder
and not trying to chase each other away.

That's all you can do! I don't have enough yard to get them out of sight of each other, so the territorial wars are on going. Then I put up a feeder for the Orioles, and the hummers all want the bigger/better one. that's between theirs. Cheap entertainment for me.

The number of hummingbirds has increased like crazy around here. Lots of them. I'll try getting pictures later this evening. Funny when there are so many of them, the fighting doesn't seem to happen. I have all of my feeders in view of each other and it works out pretty good.

Actually, I don't remember who posted last year a link about putting feeders together. It was a really good link....

Hmm. There used to be a wildlife viewing station in one of the regional parks up in the hills here that had 6 or 7 feeders only a few feet apart in front of a viewing window. They seemed to get along fine there. That being said, in those days Anna's and Black chinned were the prevalent species. The Allen's ( a Rufus subspecies) have mostly taken over the county now, and they are much more aggressive. I only see an occasional Black chinned or Anna's here now. Maybe they are further inland.

I tried putting my feeders together last year but they still fought like cats & dogs.

I was watering the daylily bed yesterday and a little female Hummer got real close and flew around in the mist form the sprinkler I was using, I was careful to hold it steady while she was there.

I tried to mist one with the hose yesterday , it hovered above me while I was filling a bucket under the feeder , so I shot the hose in the air in front of it but it flew off.

Awww, maybe it scared the little thing.
