Well that explains it, Carol. You don't need to worry about the little hummers, I'll be filling the feeders daily.

I've gone from daily to weekly filling in the last few weeks, except for the oriole feeder. Got lots of babies learning it's use, and my Allen's hummers , greedy little guys that they are, have tried to take over that one as well. The orioles just ignore them.

I held a humming bird for the first time yesterday.

Poor thing had gotten trapped in our garage. He wasn't moving very much so I picked him up and gave him honey mixed with water to drink. Just a few dabs from my finger.

I could see him drinking it with his little tongue flitting in and out. Then after about 10 minutes of laying very still in my hand, he took off.

Best end to a busy day ever!

What is the plant in the above pictures? Can you buy the seed?

If you mean Char's photo of the red flower, it's some kind of Salvia. I'm sure she'll come along and let us know which one.

@bluegrassmom The red flowers are salvia coccinea. They self-seed all over the place, but the seeds are tiny and I've not had much luck gathering them or starting the ones I do manage to harvest. They grow rapidly from cuttings however and root easily. If you'd like to have some plants, send me a tree mail. I'd be happy to share.

Another red salvia that's easy and native here is Cedar Sage, Salvia Roemeriana. I especially appreciate the colony by my driveway, where hundreds are growing all on their own. The hummers visit them often when they're blooming!

No, haven't passed out from the heat but I'm getting awful S*L*O*W.

He is looking quite animated there! I just have not taken any photos! I just enjoy the few moments I get where I am not having to do anything so much, that I really do nothing!
