Linda, How many types of hummer do you have there? Here we have Anna;s, Black chined, and three Rufus. Rufus sedentarious is a sub species called Allen's that lives up to it's name and stays all year, as do the Annas and Black chined. I'm pretty sure you have more species. I know NM does.

Carol I took this info off of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum site to answer your question.

There are well over three hundred species of hummingbirds, all native to the Americas. The vast majority, not surprisingly, are found in the tropics, where flowers abound year-round. Only a handful of species reach the United States; southern Arizona hosts more than a dozen of those. Costa’s Hummingbird is the only true desert hummer here, but several others live along the desert’s edges. Black-chinned and Broad-billed Hummingbirds nest in streamside woods in summer, while Anna’s Hummingbird, a recent invader from California, nests in the same areas (and in residential neighborhoods) in winter. Our region hosts the greatest variety of hummers in late summer, when several species are on their way south. Rufous Hummingbirds, southbound from nesting grounds in the northwest U.S., may appear in the Sonoran Desert by July, along with lesser numbers of other species, to joust for space around the blooms that follow the summer rains.

That sounds about right. We only see Rufus rufus during migration, and Costas don't come this far from the desert,. I know there more species closer to Mexico. Must be fun around there during the summer.

I think we've got females on the nest now, because they aren't coming to the feeder as often. It's Black-chinned that nest here. Others come during migration, but there has been few this spring. I'm going to put up the feeder that even the orioles can use soon, they should be here soon, hopefully. Earlier, I didn't put it up because too many bees were around then and they might drown in the nectar of the more open kind.
I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority. E. B.White

I have one pair of Hooded Orioles that are here for the third year. I have bought three different feeders for them, but they ignore them and go to the hummer feeder. At least one of the hummers does use the oriole feeder when things get crowded.

The babies were very active this morning cleaning themselves and rising high in the nest. They are pretty large now and I am sure are about to leave any minute. This is the photo I took this morning after their cleaning routine. Hilarious! Preening for the camera no doubt. Whistling

Thank You! Melanie for the kind comment and the Acorn! Hurray!

It is a fun experience and this mobile on the patio has been used every year now for several years. The Hummers love it. Plus the feeder hangs about 2-3 ft. to the side of it and a fountain of water is under the feeder. All the comforts of home, I guess!

Now I worry about them being safe as they learn to fly. Only one year did I find a little one dead on the patio. That was so sad. Crying

Today I write the final chapter on the baby Hummingbirds.

Late yesterday afternoon I noticed the bigger of the babies was out of the nest and perching on the edge of the patio on the railing. I ran to get my camera but it was gone by the time I returned. The eggs did not hatch the same day so the remaining baby was a bit younger. The smaller one was still in the nest. As I watched, Mom flew to the remaining baby and kind of bumped its mouth but would not feed it. She then went around behind it and started poking it in the rear over and over. It was hilarious! Hilarious! That caused the baby to rise up in the nest and start flapping its wings violently but it refused to leave the nest. Mom returned several times, no longer poking it but flying around the mouth area and refusing to feed the baby whose tongue kept coming out. When we went to bed the baby was still in the nest.

This morning when we got up the baby was sitting on the one rung above the nest. Mom was still around but would not feed it. She would fly back and forth trying to get the little one to fly. Mean while the 'drama queen' as I started calling her just kept cleaning herself over and over. I had other things to do and when I returned she had gotten herself to the top rung of the mobile. Finally around 9:00 when I checked again she was gone! Sorry I missed the take off but glad they both finally entered the new world in the garden. Lovey dubby

Had a little diva there eh Linda? Hilarious! Hilarious!

That's very funny & interesting how mama pokes it in the butt and refuses to feed it.
