Yes, we all have those 'first blooms' that don't look their best, but they are a symbol of better things to come!

Love seeing the pictures!

I had my first bloom ever on Jedi Brenda Spann, it was on a short scape down into the foliage. Hope that improves with time. The bloom was not fully opened even by 10:00, but then none of the blooms in the garden today, even the NOIDs were fully open, had to pry a smile out of all of them.

I guess you could say I have one and a half new blooms to open today.
Debbie Durio: It was looking very good.
Thumb of 2016-04-20/Seedfork/3f6609

Nagasaki: I can hardly call this a full bloom being it is still in the middle of the day only half way opened.
Thumb of 2016-04-20/Seedfork/f8e20b
I did finally have two blooms at one time on two clumps, things are starting to heat up a little.

Royal Eventide: This plant bloom is listed as single form, but it looks so messy to me, like a failed double on every bloom. Plus the purple color seems to gloss over and look wilted all the time. I like everything about this plant except the bloom.

Larry RE sure looks like a double to me... Have you tried to give it some shade so it doesn't look like its melting? Shrug!

The plant was probably the most vigorous plant I have so far, and I really like the purple color, so I could hardly wait for it to bloom. Lots of scapes and buds, but the bloom just doesn't look right, so in the fall I probably will move it to more shade.

I went back out this afternoon and while checking for scapes found this NOID labeled double purple. I like it, not sure if the double refers to the color or that it should have been a double form.

'Helix'

Thank you for sharing your Helix photo. I purchased it last year after its blooming season had ended, so I never saw its beauty. Your pictures are getting me excited again for my first-time viewing of it, whenever it does decide to bloom. (Sadly, we are still a ways away from that point here in MI, but your early bloom pictures are encouraging and give me hope for some possible June blooms on it.)

I am glad you enjoyed my photo of Helix. . This is the first year seeing it in my garden too. I am loving it. However the scape's not as tall as hoped.Come on June!

I get more excited every day as more and more scape's are showing up.

Stan, I'm actually hoping my scapes are a little shorter than listed Rolling my eyes. ...I like blooms just atop the foliage but so many people are hybridizing for tall plants that it's hard to find good blooms with shorter scapes.

Vickie, when I was working at Ladybug Daylilies we knew the season had started when Cyber Zone bloomed. It was always the first.

If your 'Helix' scape's are anything like mine, the bloom will rest on top of the foliage.

Lost my post somewhere along the way.
I did have several plants in bloom today, I had a second seedling try to open, but even by the end of the day it was nowhere near opened fully. Several NOIDs also failed to open fully today. Even the cultivars with blooms were looking like they all had a bad hair day, so they refused to look at the camera.
But, I did have HOT Wheels open up fully. It is a decent bloom, but on the frailest little scapes.
Thumb of 2016-04-22/Seedfork/5d77bd
Wanted to add, the bloom came just two weeks after I first saw the tiny scape appear.

Been out of town all day, came home to discover that Tribal Council and Black Eyed Stella bloomed today. Interesting that a large flowered double and a small single flower would bloom the same day here. They are very early this year, because last year Tribal Council was first on May 7 and BE Stella was third on May 13 because Miss Victoria bloomed on May 12. Sorry no pictures, but will try to get them on the next bloom.

I was late in getting to take pictures today, but I had two bloomers today. One is a repeat of an earlier NOID, but many blooms open at once today:

Thumb of 2016-04-22/scflowers/279247

The other is also a NOID, red with a darker red band. Will take some specs for height and bloom size on the next bloom in a couple of days:

Nothing but repeats and this new battered by the rain NOID, labeled NOID #3. It actually makes a large bright yellow bloom when not beaten up so bad by the rain last night.

I've seen that a few times, if it follows the pattern I think it may. It would be interesting to see another picture in a week or so. What I've seen is that the bud seems to open out prematurely and form three spokes. I don't know what causes it, I'd guess it could be insect damage especially since the scape looks like it is bent. I'd look for something like a tarnished plant bug or thrips, and it does look like the leaves might have thrips damage but it's not clear enough to be sure. Both pests are not likely to be easily seen. Larry, do you see spring sickness there?
