I walked through the gardens and have my list of the iris's that I want to thin. The list is long. I'm not sure I will get all of them done this year. I want to try, but cannot promise it will all get done. Some on the list may only have 5-6 rhizomes, some may have small rhizomes, some have 10 to 15 that I would remove from the patch. I can take "requests" and simply do the best to fill the requests. Because I won't know for sure (until about July) how many I'll thin out, I guess I'll just keep a running list of the requests (first come first serve). I'm sure I won't be able to fill all requests as some of the more popular ones may be asked for most. Hopefully I will keep the requests organized so I don't disappoint or anger anyone.

Probably odd that I'm offering this in a forum titled "Which ones will you be culling this year?" but maybe, as a newbie to shipping, this may be the best place to make the offer. Perhaps there will be less traffic since most of you probably don't want to add to your iris list. But we all know how that goes. Whistling

Anyway, here is my list of what I HOPE to thin out. (Don't forget, everyone, give me information on cleaning and shipping. First time doing this and I want to do it right.)

@petruske

Usually a "flat Rate" box from the USPost office works best. I use mostly medium sized boxes and you can get a lot of rhizomes in one!

Dig up the rhizomes and separate. Wash off all of the dirt (you could start them in a bucket of water (10% bleach)). Don't leave them too long in the bucket. Set out to dry off as you want ZERO moisture on them when you box them up. I sprinkle some anti fungal power on them as well after they have dried sufficiently. The foliage can be cut down to 8 inches or so. Box the next day or two. I punch a few holes in the box to allow air to circulate.

I don't add holes, I think it can make postal people nervous. Hilarious!

Try to ship on a Monday vs a Friday so they don't sit in a post office or truck for the weekend.

What type of anti fungal powder? Do you have a brand name that I should look for?

If shipping to California you have to print on the box "OK to open for postal inspection" Otherwise if their sniffing dogs alert them they will hold the box until they can contact someone to check it. If they can't, they will return the box. and or send you a nasty note.

I have never used any anti fungal powder. I don't punch holes much any more for irises, as I make sure they are dry before boxing.

I don't use any anti fungal powder either. You are going to kill any good bacteria that is left on the plant if you do.

I use post office flat rate boxes. There is actually a post about it in the Iris fourm. USPS flat rate Boxes. All the prices are there.

I just separate , wash, remove all dirt. A quick Dip in a 1 part bleach/ to 10 pt water. And let dry in a cool place. I leave mine in the basement with a fan blowing on them to help dry quicker. I do trim the leaves so they fit in the box.
Here's a picture of what mine look like when I ship normally. Sorry picture are kinda blurry.

Sue, as you dig, and before fans get wet, write the name of the iris on an inner fan close to the rhizome. I don't punch holes anymore as that caused a postal emergency here two springs ago. I don't sprinkle with anything as rhizomes are dry before boxing. Trim the roots back too about 4 inches or less if you prefer. Makes it easier to clean, dry and pack.

Please always use a permanent marker or paint pen as regular marker washes off with the slightest moisture or if you put them in water to refresh after receiving them. Then you have no idea what they were if it washes off.

These peeps have given great advice. I shipped my first irises 2 years ago following them and they did fine. I mail usually on a Monday so they'll arrive by the weekend. That's best for most people.

I read your list and you have some gorgeous ones. I have a side bed I need to clear out to make room for more iris. I have a short list I would like from you.

The name on the leaf has helped me more than once. A neighbor's cat likes to dig and displace the tags. I leave that leaf on as long as possible. Even shriveled, I can still read it. Thumbs up Or at least make out enough to reposition the tag.

Last summer I took photos after planting, and made sure I could read the tags in the pics- that has saved me a few times already!
