They're all beauties, Lindsey. You're gonna love the Epi once it starts propagating itself. Very easy, blooms all the time, takes sun or some shade . . no worries, mate! Stick it in a pot, done deal.

There's a house on one of my nearby streets that has a huge pot of them out front, in the full blazing morning sun until about 2pm. It's a 4ft. wide and high mass of orange blooms from March through November.

They even planted a whole block of them in a street median near Selby one year. Blazing sun under palm trees, cars whizzing by. Took them out after a couple of years because they were spreading out into the road.

I just received this notice from the University of Florida:

It is with great sadness to report that Dr. Thomas Sheehan passed away Monday night at his home in Gainesville at the age of 92. Earlier in the day, Tom attended a local orchid society meeting, where he introduced Mike Kane, who then gave a presentation. He spent the evening doing what he loved to do, being in the company of orchid enthusiasts and their orchids. Tom and his wife Marion Ruff Sheehan were part of a group of founding members of the Gainesville Orchid Society back in the early 1960s. Tom was a world renowned and respected orchidologist, known for his expertise on anything orchid and a founding member of the Department of Ornamental Horticulture in 1956.

Locally, Tom was known for his goodness, and his passing leaves a void of goodness in all who had the privilege of knowing him. Tom was a Professor Emeritus and former Chairman of the Department of Environmental Horticulture at the University of Florida. During his career in the Ornamental Horticulture Department, later to become Environmental Horticulture, he taught floriculture and orchidology courses, served on countless graduate committees, and mentored scores of graduate students. He retired in 1991, but remained connected with the department and his chosen field. Tom continued to travel internationally to attend orchid conferences until just recently. He spoke to orchid societies around the world, including Australia, Bermuda, Canada, East Africa, Germany, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and the United States.

The American Orchid Society gave Tom its most prestigious award, the Gold Medal of Achievement in 1995, and named him Honorary Vice President of the Society. He published some 350 articles on plants and wrote several books about orchids. He was co-author with his beloved wife, Marion of the series “Orchid Genera Illustrated” in the American Orchid Society's monthly magazine, the American Orchid Society Bulletin, later renamed Orchids. The series ran for 186 months (15 ½ years). Tom also co-authored: Florida Landscape Plants: Native and Exotic with John Watkins and Bob Black and Orchids to Know and Grow with Bob Black.

Aww, he sounds like he was a terrific fellow. I have a copy of his "Orchids . ." book right here in front of me on my desk.

LOL, Don't you just hate it when that happens? Sadly it happens here all too often, you are far from alone.

Seriously, do any of you have a good inventory system you can recommend? I would love something quick and dirty that I could keep on my phone.

Thanks Alice!
I use the orchid album app on my iPhone... But you have to actually open it and use it while acquiring plants... I love it and it's easy to use.. It's not available for android phones but is available for pc computers.
The very end of our orchid meeting was chaotic..especially when they realized that these 5 plants didn't get into the fundraising auction.. So I just snatched them up and bolted.. Well , after I wrote the check to the club!

well....not so fast Sparky!
I KNEW that I needed more dark purple flowers to balance out all the rum punch colored ones...and I'm still looking for White and semi alba forms...but that's another story!
A quick inventory of the bench tonight and I've got a bunch of plants with nice fat buds...

Hmm. I've got two Digbyanas...same vendor, 1 year apart. My excuse is that I haven't seen a bloom yet. Sighing!

How about this. At an orchid show some years back, my shoes were really burning, lots of smoke, lots and lots of smoke. So much so that I didn't see I had bought the same plant from two different vendors!!! Rolling on the floor laughing

I have to admit, I have two Den. aggregatum (lindleyii) Shrug! but I did want to mount two on a piece of cork, so it was 'on purpose'. Then I bought a second Bl. Star Ruby 'Xanadu' when I saw a nice one on sale at Rafael's while my first one at home was blooming.

Beautiful show, Jim! Now what I want to know is can you fit those names on a tag? If you print them on the computer, can you read them without a magnifying glass? Green Grin!

Oh, oh, oh, I forgot to show you all the wonderful display at Trader Joe's the other day. Jim's beautiful ! ! mini-Phal up at the beginning of his post reminded me.

Gorgeous show, btw Jim. You did put in the same name twice for Lime Cooler, but we know which one it is. I've killed that one twice, I think. Glare

Thanks, Elaine. I fixed the post.

Carol, for the tag, I would use abbreviations and not put the parent's names. The second one would therefore be Rby. Lime Cooler 'Krull-Smith'
