I did have a lot of damage done to another Dracaena. It was a very large Red-margined Dracaena. You can see it in the first picture on the left behind the front rock. That pic was taken last summer and it was doing very well and happy in the GH until a week or so ago when for some reason the heater didn't turn on and we had serious damage to the plants. Second pic is how that Dracaena looked a few days ago. I cut the branches way back today in hopes that it will put out new branches.

Arucatv, Welcome!
Don't know if you know this but the whole family of Sansevieria is now called Dracaena. Knowing they will hybridize with each other, it was my hope of having one of my Dracaena bloom so I could collect the pollen and cross pollinate with one of my Sansevieria. So far after almost 10 years my Dracaena is no closer to blooming then when I first bought them.

I was told they have to be many years old and grown in a simi-tropical conditions. Any secrets you can share?

I had one bloom in an office I was servicing. Wasn't given anything special, it just bloomed! What I would suggest is to give it greenhouse conditions -- very bright light, nice and warm (80+), lots of humidity and then fertilize the heck out of it with a bloom food. They're tropicals so make it like Hawaii and they'll be happy.

I rescued a Dracaena Marginata that somebody had thrown out. It looked like it was starved of light and very over watered. I put it under my grow light for a while then at night I put the plant next to the bathroom radiator so it can dry out some of that water, the next day I put it back under the grow light and its been sat there ever since and already its putting out new growth and its only been about a week. I'm quite happy with it and it looks nice with the other plants.

Here are some photos of it.

Dracaena braunii (sanderiana)(lucky bamboo) is a real winner for me. I have the variegated kind. I got a little 3 or 4 inch pot about ten years ago, gave it to son for his college loft apt. That came back to me, and I have since grown it on, made cuttings, shared, and up potted (they eventually send out new stems from the base) to two ten inch pots of multiple stems up to 4 feet tall. It stays upright and narrow, not hogging floor space. Sometimes they've summered on my deck, for winter of course they must be inside. They've hung out in low light a few months and not cared. They've never had the mites, mealybugs, or aphids I deal with on other plants in my home or workplace. Just super 'easy' and to me, pretty.
Plant it and they will come.

I recently picked up a pot of sad looking variegated lucky bamboo. I took 7 cuttings, rooted them, and potted them up in soil. I'm looking forward to when they get tall. They are so lush even now.

Thinking like Sansevieria I place mine in full sun last summer. Wonder why they did so poorly. Then I read they are simi shade loving plants. In a shady spot they recovered and did well.

Perhaps someone can advise on this. I've had this dracaena for about a year now. It's grown a lot and I've pruned it to grow taller. One of the tops is being weird tho. The new leaves are very thin, almost mushy, and very light green, some are turning brown very quickly out of the normal order. I have some brown tips on leaves of the plant but no other top on the plant is putting out leaves like this. Even the other top on the same trunk isn't as bad. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this or how to remedy?

Also, the plant came kind of braided, I haven't done anything to further braid it or undo the braid, any advise on what I should do about the trunks?

I'm also open to any general care advise. The plant was quite rootbound when I brought it home but I repotted it into a slightly larger pot upon bringing it home last spring. Last season other than the new soil (miracle gro cactus soil with a bit of extra perlite) and some 10-10-10 granular added under the rocks mid season I did not do any additional fertilization.

How close to a light source is it? How do you decide when to water it and how much water do you give it? It's probably a light or water issue, or both since they affect each other.

Hi everyone,
Got this Dracaena ("Burley"?) last week. The nursery I got it from advised on the (plastic) pot seen in the picture. Thing is, seeing pictures of similar Dracaenas, none of them are planted in such a large pot, and even the bigger ones are planted in much smaller pots? Plus, after realizing in retrospect the staff there were truly unprofessional (planted me a Sansevieria in a non-drainage pot, tried selling me heavy soil as a cactus soil), I'm starting to wonder if such a large pot is necessary for this Dracaena (not speaking of the room it takes).
I also see that in a lot of Dracaena Burley pictures, the leaves are more straight and not falling to the sides. What do you think?

And of course, any additional tips and guidance for a complete novice would be much appreciated! Smiling
Thanks!

You are right, the pot is too big. Since it has been in it such a short time, it would be okay to repot it down a few sizes. The leaves are completely normal, sometimes they just do that. Dracaenas are pretty tough forgiving plants so basic care instructions; bright light (not a lot of direct sun), moist but not soggy and normal temperatures will keep it happy.
