Fame Monstrose is truly weird. I am just starting out with this one, in its third season, but it seems to do a moderate amount of chicks. A word of caution in that it is somewhat prone to rot when damaged or kept too wet so keep it on the dry side and be very cautious when shipping or transplanting.

Finally got the last of my plants potted up. They are all happily in the garage. Right in front of the sliding glass door. Getting to be time for me to set up my lighted table. Might get that done in the next week and then I can put them under lights. I was well pleased with the plants and the freebies she sent along as well. I also got 2 or more of Black Mini, Dallas, Plum Rose and Starshine as free extras and they Substituted Summer Wine for the Rose Queen and sent me 4 of those.

This thread is so exciting to go back through. All the wonderful healthy plants are just amazing. What a great way to start the year off, with all of these great plants.
Will be so much fun seeing them come to maturity and have offsets this growing season.

Holly that second set of photos is just as wonderful as the first. Lovey dubby

Can't wait to see Cynthia's photos.

Holly, ask NH if their greenhouse/growing area is unheated. If not heated, your plants might be happier outside. Our winterthaw is due in a few weeks!

twitcher, My garage is not heated and is only about 10* above outside temps which are 27* right now. Actually we call it a garage as it was built as a deep one car attached garage. But the garage door was replaced years ago buy a glass slider and it has always been used for storage never had a car in it. LOL The last few years it has been used as extra growing space in the spring. I was thinking after I gave them a dry few days in the garage I could either set the trays outside or I could start up the lighted table. I was thinking the slightly warmer slightly brighter area would promote growth maybe I should just set them outside in a few days.

North Hills told me they're grown in cold frames. They are in WV, which has about the same weather as I do, maybe a little colder. I ask because I wanted to set mine outside.. I tip my hat to you.

That's great, Holly. I was concerned about etoliation of your plants, if you push them to growth in a warmer environment that does not have a good light intensity, such as under lights. I would not give them any water at all until you get them outside and just let them concentrate on rooting while inside. Sure looks like a nice collection!

Twit...what do you do if you have plants that have etiolated? Will they survive? I have a couple that have done that this winter.

Etoliated plants may eventually die if they do not get enough light, but regarding semps and relatives, they will usually just get tall and stringy, then resume normal growth when given enough light. They will last a long time under cool/cold conditions, regardless of light intensity as long as not given a lot of water. You will end up with distorted plants without much color, but the offsets will be normal as long as done under proper light. That is why we recommend not trying to grow indoors, unless you have a greenhouse or something similar with a lot of light. Back before I became a collector, I had a bunch in strawberry jars that I just stuck in an unheated garage for the entire winter. No light, no water, no care. I would just stick the pots back outside in April or May when I thought to do it and they always did fine.

Another consideration is pushing growth under less than ideal situations can result in offset production before the proper season/conditions, so the offsets could be etoliated as well. Again, plants will survive and just have distorted growth.

Not a major worry, but just didn't want to see your beautiful plants distort and lose color.

My new ones are fine and they are outside in a protected area. It's a couple that I bought late last fall and they were so tiny, I thought I'd keep them inside. They've been directly under lights, but they are still etiolated and look very fragile. Glad to know they might make it. Smiling

Great advice for us twit. So much to learn and so little time. You make it easier for all of us to understand just how things work with the semps.
Thank you my friend. Smiling
