Thanks, Neal - what we have here is nothing like that (fortunately!). I'll ask the neighbours here - they're keen gardeners (but more on the fruit and veg side) so might be able to help.

I had roses at my first house with great success, but haven't had any luck at this house and gave up for 10 years. Bought 5 new Hybrid teas in Spring.
Wish me luck.

Oh if they were living there, you'd know it! They also attack fruit trees and grapevines ...and callas, and cannas, and dahlias...uuugggg. But rose blooms are their favorite of course. Well, I guess I can't fault them for that- they've got good tastes Hilarious! They did fuel my interest in old garden roses because the one time bloomers are finished before beetles emerge.

This is why I often say I live for first flush Hilarious!

Neal, I see now why JB seasons is dreaded by rose growers over there! Must break your heart to see the lovely blooms devastated by those beetles!

Mika - I just googled the JB and discovered these disturbing reports from last year.

Sharlene, that photo doesn't show how nasty it can be. I've often seen such a thick mass of beetles covering the buds that no color showed through at all. By that time the buds and blooms are too damaged to salvage, so I just snip the bug covered bloom and all into a bucket of hot soapy water.

Several years ago after inoculating with milky spore I saw a dramatic reduction in Japanese beetles. I saw a few here and there nibbling a petal, but no serious or obvious damage. That lasted for about 4 or 5 years. I can't be certain it was actually the milky spore that made the difference because it seemed I didn't see much beetle activity in other gardens in the area either. I didn't really scrutinize other yards that closely either, so its hard to say.

Gorgeous bouquets Rita! Thumbs up I've enjoyed having an abundance of blooms this year, enough that I don't mind or even miss blooms cut to bring inside.

I did flowers for 2 weddings over the weekend, and am still somewhat pooped. It was 4 days of go go go and I missed some first blooms. Its been so rainy and I've been so busy weeds were getting out of control and hiding some new blooms. I took care of the worst of it among the new roses and found lovely blooms on Teasing Georgia, Graham Thomas, Lady of Shallot, and Munstead Wood. Hurray! My favorite of the bunch is Teasing Georgia. Its blooming in clusters, and with more warm apricot showing than I expected. Not sure I'm going to want to leave it where I've positioned it, but what a beauty! Lovey dubby

Nacogdoches is one of the new own root plants I got from Chamblee's this spring. It was the only one I thought was too small, but it has grown vigorously and surprised me with blooms under the weeds. They have a nicer form and substance than I expected, and more petals too.

Nacogdoches is so YELLOW compared to my "yellow" Molineux. Garden Delight is a happy one, and I didn't know there was a red Fairy. I just got cuttings of the regular one.

Your beds look just the way I want mine to look, Neal.

Red Fairy is a Ralph Moore rose and it's an absolute treasure. It might be the most drought-resistant rose I've ever seen. I have a huge one that's about 4-5 feet tall and 6 feet wide. It grew from a pruned cutting I dropped at the edge of a gravel pathway. It's in a spot that is never hit by any of the sprinklers, so it gets watered only by rain. That means it gets virtually no water at all between the end of April and the beginning of November. It's in full sun and is covered with large clusters of blooms all season. The clusters never droop or look parched or dry.

The original one, from which the cutting came, is in a spot where it gets watered regularly, but it's in heavily dappled shade. It's also huge and blooms constantly. This rose grows well under virtually any conditions -- sun/shade, wet/dry, sandy loam/mostly gravel.

Red Fairy also keeps blooming through heat and humidity here and Japanese beetles don't bother it. I also have a 2nd because it rooted above the graft and broke off when I moved it.

So far I'm not seeing much fading on Nacogdoches, I think I'm really going to like it.
