I have the Candy Lily. Mine are a very pretty pink. These are great plants with a long season of interest. I just don't have room or I'd get the orange ones too.

@Suga, Daniel already answered you and he's in SC too. I am in MS, zone 8b, and my conditions are very similar to yours. They grow great here.

Depending on where you are along the coast it may be too humid for them. Daniel is in the upstate and his growing conditions are not even close to coastal growing. I grew them in Columbia and they did beautifully but they have just melted for me in Beaufort Country. At Ken's price it can't hurt to try a few and see what happens, they are beautiful and multiply rapidly.

Seems like the coastal conditions would keep Temps from getting to high even though I'm in 7b im only 5 miles from 8a in landcaster. we don't have coastal winds just hot stagnant air often over 100f I can't believe they did good in Columbia but not Saint Helena Island. Columbia is bad hot I'm there almost twice a week. I know your winters are milder but do you not think that the coastal breeze keeps you cooler then further in land? I lived on doorchester rd in Charslton one summer and I loved it outside. while it was humid it didn't seem nearly as hot as Columbia thanks to the almost constant breeze. A good example is hilton head where Temps the next 10 days will not get over 95 but we will see Temps around the same and 1 day at 101 with overcast and rain mixed in.

LOL, No place is as hot as Columbia and while we are the southernmost region of the state we are, as you say, generally cooler. But, it is not the heat but the humidity and the damp, cool soil during the winter doesn't help. The Dorchester Rd. area is significantly higher and dryer than the sea islands. I lived in Dorchester County during the 60's/70's and the elevation was about 80'; that's why the planters sent their families there to avoid TB in the late 1800's. It is only 14' where I live now. If Suga is closer to high land the Blackberry lilies should do fine.

I have read with interest your descriptions of the various "regions" of SC. Keep in mind that I lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast........you want hot and humid? These irises grew well there. The difference is that I had them all in large pots and only used them for landscape plants when I moved up to NE Mississippi. Needless to say, we are still very hot, very muggy, and have sort of wet, still humid, though colder winters.

Most of the Mississippi coast is very much like the northern coast in SC, very sandy and "beachy." Down here we are more like the marshy Grand Bay area.

Not at all, Alice. We are far more marshy than sandy. In fact, every single square foot of beach along the entire coastline was man-made. We have barrier islands, and those islands prevent sand from coming closer than 10 miles of our shoreline. We pump all that sand in. Our Gulf sound is basically mud. Now you know.
