I went out specifically today to take a clump shot of Alice Faye. I'm hybridizing with it so try to ignore the tags. These flowers are on two scapes.

My camera never gets the color correct. It is actually a deeper orange color.

Glen - Lovely cluster of blooms! Is your Planet Max a late bloomer? I ask because mine has yet to bloom. It appears to have settle in and established itself since being transplant last year. I am still hoping for blooms this year.

Becky, yes, it is a late bloomer. Nearly always November and usually middle to late that month. So that will be late spring here and where you are.

I like clump shots better than individual bloom close-ups because they display more about the plant's true nature.. One of the most important for me is how tall are the scapes in relation to the foliage. My personal preference is for daylilies that display several inches above the foliage rather than just above or even worse nestled in the leaves. Another thing clump shots show is how does the foliage look when the daylily is in bloom. Too many cultivars have foliage that begins to deteriorate when the flowering starts and quickly become eyesores in the garden.

Clump shots do show much more than single bloom shots, but they are so hard to get right. It seems almost impossible to take a nice clump shot and keep any detail of the bloom. I guess my best solution is to take a clump shot followed up by a single bloom shot.

Glen - Thank you for your reply. I don't know what time frame July is considered in Florida? I don't know if it is mid-season or late? I suppose it is mid-season, but many of my mid-season bloomers have already bloomed and are long ago done. I do have some producing scapes and buds for the first time, so not sure if these are late bloomers or mid-season bloomers. I have a hard time determining which part of the season it is here in the south.

Becky, as Glen said your Planet Max should have bloomed in late spring in your area. It is listed as Early midseason. So in a normal season after it gets established it should have bloomed by now. But, being it is a young plant and in your zone it might take a while to get established? I planted mine in March of this year and it has already bloomed.

I received my Planet Max a year ago and planted it in a smaller raised bed this past early October 2015. Perhaps it has gone into heat dormancy? It is very hot here currently and has been for about a month or more. I have numerous cultivars that did not bloom this year. I currently see scapes on about 7 or so plants (some seedlings and some named and registered daylilies). I guess daylilies do well some years and not so other years?

Now that I am thinking about it, in that particular bed, only 2 cultivars (out of 8) have bloomed. I also have Lady Neva, Fol de Rol, Get Jiggy, Winter Rainbow, Springfield Clan, Planet Max, and the two that did bloom - Webster's Pink Wonder and Beautiful Edgings. The leaves look ok. Only Lady Neva and Fol De Rol have produced substantial growth. The rest seem to have maintained their size from what they were a year ago. Maybe that raised bed has some issue? Or are some cultivars more picky when transplanted?

Yes, like noted by Larry. Becky, you and I and Larry are similar distances from the equator so our flowering times should be similar. Just add six months on to get the months. Yours should have flowered in May.

*Blush* *Blush* Oh dear my bad. I am Charmaine. I really don't know who knows or doesn't know my real identity. I've always felt it was a conflict of interest to be moderator of the Daylily forum and "promote" my intro's on the forum so I try not to do it. I do however post images of them occasionally when they fit the thread topic or in the monthly bloom threads. So sorry for any confusion.

Yes, I do grow Witch Hollow Smiling and love it....even though I have never been that fond of reds. (Scapes are up and peak bloom should be around the week of the 20th to the 27th. If you'd like to come up and visit send me a tmail to let me know when.)

I also realized I said "six" in my post and only listed 5. I forgot Noble Lord, a wonderful rich velvety purple. Not the best clump shot as it only shows part of the clump.

Good job everyone! Your daylilies are singing with joy! I only have one clump shot but in its defense it is a rebloom clump. Joining the chorus Leebea Orange Crush.

Three immediately come to mind, two of which are older cultivars:

Thumb of 2016-07-15/jrbales/494248 'Black Eyed Stella'

'Black Eyed Stella'

'Crimson Pirate'

'Frans Hals'

These photos were all taken early in the blooming season and within a week or so were heavy-blooming clumps. 'Frans Hals' I would love to have a large bed of them, they really caught my eye every time I walked to the east side of the house. 'Crimson Pirate is my largest planting, seven or eight clumps, so they were visually striking as well since every clump was prolific.

Oh, almost forgot: 'Strawberry Fields Forever" (same hybridizer as 'Strawberry Candy')

This was one of my first daylilies. The first year it barely hung on so I moved it. Second year it was not a stellar performer and I was considering pitching it. Glad I didn't! Third year, 2015, it produced a large number of scapes loaded with buds. Then as the first round of scapes were finishing, it produced a second crop (not as heavy but still a nice display). Fourth year (2016) it has been an outstanding performer again. The bed isn't even one that was fully prepared before I planted the clumps there and still it's prolific!

This is Fire Keeper, my favorite red. The photo just cannot capture the vibrancy or the velvet texture of the blooms. It also blooms on very thick scapes which stand 4-6 inches above the foliage.
