Rather that start a new thread for each month I thought I would do one by the seasons instead. So this is the thread for the rest of the summer. Feel free to post any Hibiscus related discussion here. New acquisitions, blooms, propagating successes or whatever you like.

Today I got the first blooms on my Hibiscus 'Blue River II'. The interesting thing to me was that I only planted the seeds back in March. From seed to bloom in only four months seems amazing. especially on this type of Hibiscus. For me Hardy Hibiscus usually take at least a year, sometimes two.

Just moist vermiculite. I fill a cell almost to the top with moist vermiculite, lay the seeds on top, covered with a thin layer of vermiculite that I then moistened with a spray bottle. I made sure it didn't dry out, that's it. All the Hibiscus used to create "Hardy Hibiscus" are swamp/marsh plants so I keep all my potted ones sitting in a tray of water.

Well, that's how I am going to start mine. Usually I just drop mine on the ground where I want them in the spring

All those that I start from seeds. I'm hoping to try some cuttings this weekend, weather permitting.

This is a cutting from my son's Snow Queen
It surprised me today, the bloom was in the back 😊

This was my first attempt at tropical cuttings
I only have 4 including this one now

Snow Queen is beautiful. I have never rooted a tropical hibiscus but I think I will give it a try.

Cleaning up under my big white hib. yesterday and found babies. First time I've ever found sprouts!

A cutting I took last year of Hibiscus grandiflorus is about six feet tall and starting to bloom.



I purchased a Hibiscus grandidieri online back in April. It was covered in blooms when I received it, but with a couple of days it completely lost all it bloom, seed pods and leaves. Now just three months later it has regained all it's leaves and is starting to bloom.

That's a sweet little bloom!!

I also have a variegated one but it has not bloomed...
H. schizopetalus has couple of blooms. I successfully rooted it

I took two cutting about a month ago that I just potted up plus I plan on taking some more now that I know how easily it roots.

Ok, put me on your list - for it that is so special - haven't seen a bloom like that in hibiscus.

You will definitely get one. That noid looks very familiar, but I can't say what it is right now, I will look around. It looks like one that has some Hibiscus schizopetalus in it.

Jay, could I ask pretty please, would you root me one??? I am sure it's not hardy in zone 8 but I would grow it in a pot so I could bring it in.

Also if anyone wants seeds from my big white hibiscus, let me know. It's hardy and making seed pods.

I've never really shipped live plants and am a bit hesitant, especially with this one since I know how badly it reacts to shipping. But I will see what I can do. Betsy lives live near me and we can exchange in person.

Well I didn't say I wouldn't do it, just hesitant since I have no experience shipping live plants. I purchased a large one and it dropped everything, leaves, blooms, and pod when I unpacked and transplanted it. Fortunatly it bounced back very fast, so if you are willing to take the risk of the cost of shipping a small cutting I will consider it. Let me see what they look like when they get large and established enough to ship. If you would rather purchase a blooming size plant from a nursery with shipping experience, then this is where I got mine and the only place I found that carry it.

My Ft. Myers Yellow and my NOID Red that I've had for years are blooming again.
