Oh, Tarev. Talk about repot orchids! I'll at least wait until blooms are gone. But I wonder isn't it nice to grow it in the center and straight up like the one I got? Any way, in the house and in a container, it is never gonna be like in nature. But thanks, I'll know when I do it.

I'll ask this here since it is one of my WM Phals. As you can see in the photos I have roots coming out above the medium on these. This is actually one orchid with two parts coming out either side of the main stem. Should I unpot, carefully clip below the new roots and as I did my other Keikis this morning wrap in Sphagnum moss and hope for the best?

I just let aerial roots of my Phals go anywhere they like. They are happy that way, part of their epiphytic nature. I actually like seeing them do that, reassures me plant is alive and okay. I just gently water the roots to soften it a bit and loop it back on top of the media if it is getting too out of control. My Phals containers are hanging, so it is not difficult to let the roots go anywhere it likes.

I once heard a speaker say that he had seen a Phalaenopsis in the wild where the roots had wandered some 13 feet from the base of the plant. Naturally I was a bit skeptical at first but when I looked more closely at the projected image, those roots were really strong and long! Even if they were eight feet or even ten feet, those are some wonderful roots!
Phalaenopsis have that annoying habit of 'leaving' the pot' and wandering soon after repotting. Just the nature of the beast. But they will also react similarly to stale media. What you'll see are new roots that avoid growing down into the mix. Why? They know it is broken down and it is too moist down in the pot.
I preach to my beginners to repot Phals every year! Many of you will think No Way!! This guy is Nuts!! But truthfully gang, Phals along with the slipper orchids are two genera that respond to repotting by displaying great vigor when it comes to growth. Especially root growth. And good root growth simplifies orchid culture immensely.
More roots=more water uptake=bigger blooms=more blooms!! If the human body is 98.something water..... what percentage of water is in an orchid flower? Probably more? Right? So it only stands to reason that root growth is extremely critical.

Good information Bill and in fact I was going to start repotting mine that didn't put out any spikes this year and then those that are blooming after they're done.

I have done away with frequent repotting by using a media that does not degrade in some of my Phals and keeping them in containers with room to move about, those roots really like that a lot, lots of air., whether the continue to stay inside or wander outside, okay with me as long as roots stay healthy. Thankfully my Phals are responding wonderfully, seeing good root growth.

Here is an image of one of my Phals which get repotted every year. Root system is good, flowers numbered 9 when it bloomed in late February. Flowers lasted until early May. They were five and a quarter inches wide with a very nice arrangement.
I will try to post images later this summer when I repot these guys to document the root systems and the step by step procedure I use in reporting.

Bill, Mine is similar to yours (white color flowers). It bloomed early this year and lasted until early June. I was/am thinking about repotting it after bloom gone, but hesitated because lack of experience... now knowing you'll document your work on roots and repotting process, I'll surely wait until your repotting is done and documentation is out with (needed) pictures... then follow to do mine. Thanks and look forward to reading your report.

My process for Phals. Works well for me.
Clay or plastic
Fill bottom one third with aliflor mix
Fill middle one third with sphagnum moss.
Fill top one third of pot with aliflor mix.
Aliflor mix is 60% aliflor or Hydroton, 20% seedling gade charcoal and 20% sponge rock.
Mix works well for me because aliflor layers dry quickly yet sphagnum layer holds more moisture. Plants are watered once weekly in summer, once every ten days in cooler weather. They are on a bench under the overhang in my lanai. It is bright later in the day but no sun really.
My Phalaenopsis like it and I am using same potting method for my Oncidiums and my Catasetums.
Just keep in mind that I am sub-tropical, bark mixes rot in six months!! Ugh

I see your point, Bill. The media type has to be determined by factors including weather zone. In the high humidity area like yours, bark mix may not endure long time spent, yet in desert-like area here, orchids mostly do well, if not thrive, in bark mix for long run (at least one year?)

Still waiting to see your live repotting presentation. Tks

Every growing area is different Fiat. You will have to discover and observe your plants closely and adjust other aspects as needed. It took me awhile to understand that, and every year will be different too.

Originally one of those ice cube orchids in a big box store; getting ready to bloom it's 4th time. I don't use the ice cube method to water.
