...and all grown in full, blazing sun. Wow, I wish I could have gotten to the festival, it would have been a sight to see in person.

I can't wait to get my bulbs! Moonlight is one of my favorites and I miss it (it was left at our old house when we moved). I can't remember which one I got in the second box but I know it's one of the red ones, LOL. I love Caladiums, whether in ground or in containers or hanging baskets!

I love Caladiums, too! I ordered the smaller box of Florida Sweetheart. I am doing another garden/yard project and was thinking I needed some more caladiums for the new area ..... then Bill started this thread! Perfect timing! Big Grin Thumbs up

Hi Becky,

I was so glad to see this thread too! I got a small box of Moonlight and a small box of Red Flash and just received an e-mail that mine have shipped!

Since we moved into this house three months ago, we've been slowly clearing a few areas in the yard that were overrun with weeds. There's so much Virginia Creeper, Pothos, Syngonium, Bitter Gourd, Smilax, etc. around this property that it has really been a chore and it will be a work in progress for some time to try to get things under control. Two places in particular in the front yard were overrun with Mexican Petunia (Ruellia simplex) Grumbling I had a few Caladiums in containers that I brought with us from Daytona so I planted them in one spot where I think I got all the Ruellia up. There's another huge area beneath some oak trees where the Ruellia is still sprouting up from those awful rhizomes so it's going to be an on-going battle for awhile. I will probably plant some of my caladium bulbs and pot others up.

Lin - I have many of the same weeds as you do since there are undeveloped lots around me. It's a constant battle. My biggest battle though is with the Brazilian Pepper trees. The seeds are dropped all over my yard by the birds and winds in Winter months. I remove thousands of seedlings annually every Spring - Fall found growing in my yard and garden beds. They sprout up everywhere! Ugh.

My caladiums are going in a new area (arbor) that I am creating. I am hoping I can get it all done before school starts next week. Where did my summer break go????? Sticking tongue out

I battle Palmetto seedlings. The trees are too tall to trim the flowers without a bucket truck. I wish there was an easy way to control them.

I've also been yanking out Brazilian Pepper seedlings and we've cut back and are going to remove a few Saw Palmettos ... the leaf margins on those things are so sharp!

Becky, you work with young children don't you? This summer has really flown by; we've been so busy with the move and selling the house in Daytona and now working in this yard ... I can't believe it's August already!! My husband goes back to teaching on his birthday, Aug. 29th ... he will be commuting to Daytona two days a week until he decides to fully retire which, depending on how the commute goes may be next year! Green Grin!

We have a few palmettos in the front yard that we want to take out. Our front yard has a big slope so we're going to have topsoil delivered to level the area and then lay sod and he says we'll get it all done before his classes start ... hah, I don't think it will happen so quickly, We've been clearing a big area at the end of our driveway too; I yanked out a huge amount of southern sword ferns and lopped some Cordyline plants that I thought we'd dig out but we've decided we may keep them. He took his chain saw to some palms and a chinese tallow tree in that same area ... so we are making headway. It will just be much more pleasant if we wait to do a lot of it in the fall. Smiling

Yes, it is just way too hot to be outside for too long and especially during the hottest part of the day. I have so much work still left to do. I feel the pressure now to get it all done. Between working and the union business, I don't know how much time I will have after work and on weekends. I am so not ready to return to work.

I can not imagine your husband driving to Daytona 2 days a week to work. Maybe he should transfer to another college? There is Indian River College in Fort Pierce if he is still wanting to teach instead of fully retire.

LOL, he's been teaching in the Aviation field (at Embry Riddle Aeronautical Univ.) for 41 years and is really, really close to wanting to retire. Green Grin! He's planning on doing a phase out next year.

I think the drive every day he works will bring his career to a quick retirement. That driving will get old really fast! Sticking tongue out

LOL, that's what I've been telling him since we bought this house. It's about a one hour forty five minute drive each way from our door to the university and depending on traffic, accidents, weather, etc., it could be even longer .... but he likes to drive so he's going to attempt to continue teaching for awhile. Our tenants leas was up at the end of April and they wanted to rent from us longer (they were trying to decide if they wanted to build a house or buy one already built) but my husband took the entire summer off (he usually teaches one term) and he was adamant that he wanted to move down on May 1st. The fall semester runs until early December and then he will be off for a few weeks again for the holidays ... so the Tuesday and Thursday commute probably won't be so bad.

Bill, no more for me, but I wanted to let you know that my mom has 10 different colossal caladium bulbs (in planters and in-ground) around the front entrance and loves them! I only managed to send 2 planters down to my MIL with Jim this spring (he refused to dig! in his defense, they were pretty busy), but they are on her front porch. I saw them last week, and they grew into magnificent plants, visible from the road 100 feet away!

Mine arrived today, too! I haven't had the time yet to do anything but open the box to allow them to air out. Box was loaded with bulbs! They will be planted in the next few days. Thank you, Bill!
