@RickM

Do I need to separate it now?
What will happen if I separate it next spring?
I've never separated a Hosta before. I'm scared!!!

Splitting a hosta is a straight forward process.

You don't need to separate it now, or ever really. If you don't separate it, There's no telling what will come up in the spring. It could all look like the 'original', all like the sport, or remain as a combination. It's totally up to you.

Yes, you can separate it in the spring. But to do so, you will need to wait until you have leaves out from all of the eyes so that you can tell where to split.

Hosta are best planted in the spring and/or fall so that they have time to put out new roots before the heat of summer or cold of winter get ugly.

Here are several references that show you how to divide a hosta.

Be aware that juvenile and adult forms of many hosta are different. It's been a while since I've had a small 'stained glass', so I can't really speak to whether or not it's 'stained' glass' or 'rainforest sunrise'. Maybe someone else can tell for sure.

So what did I do?

I bought more Hosta from Hosta House.

Thumb of 2016-09-12/SpringGreenThumb/7c131f

On the bench is another large 'Liberty'.
It has six divisions and I paid $16 for it.
On the bottom left is a Mature full grown 'Stained Glass' I have not counted the divisions but it's loaded under there.
I paid $20 for that one coming into bloom.

On the bottom right is 'Paradigm'.
I paid $12 for that one.

I also talked to him about my deer problem. He had an extra motion sensored sprinkler that he had in his shed. He set it up to make sure it was working and sent that home with me also to help me protect my Hosta.

That was super sweet. Lovey dubby Lovey dubby

I think I'm his lifelong customer. I know he will sell me the best of what he has at a reasonable price and it will be the correct variety and one that grows well in this area.

The substance of the leaf is different.
The small one is thick and puckered.
Stained glass is smooth and thinner.

I have no doubt that it was rainforest sunrise at Lowe's because they had all the moonstruck Hosta marked as "Rainforest Sunrise". (Stupid Clerk)

They were just guessing which was which as they tagged.

Then He also talked me into buying this cold hardy fast growing shade loving ground cover. It's called Houttuynia.

"Taste it!" He said "It's edible. "You can put it in your salad."
So I tasted it and OH BOY!!!

That was Good! I loved it!! I intend to buy more in the future. Edible and beautiful.

Exactly what I'm trying to accomplish in my landscapes. Yummy!

I'm happy again!

If you hosta leaves are tattered, remember that it's near the end of the season anyway. Leave what is left as it will continue to feed the plant and next year they should be fine. But let's hope your damage was minimal.

Some are pretty tattered. Crying Crying

The ones under the thickest tree leaves were the least damaged but the ones with more open sky and less overhead leaves took a real beating. Holes in the leaves. Some leaves are torn in shreds. Sad Crying

At least I got a picture for the couple of days it was pretty. 🌺

Think we are in line for the storm you got a few days ago, hopefully no hail.

At least they still look like Hosta. I suppose the torn parts will start to dry up and die now.... but as Viola mentioned the season is coming to a close anyway... 🌺😊
