NH Called me this morning. He looked at the images on this thread...
He says the plants did not look like that when he sent them. The FED EX truck told him 4 days to delivery but instead it took more than a week and tracking says they sat in the hot truck for 3 days besides that.

He told me to plant them because they have good roots and trim off the bad foliage and see if they come back.

Also he says he will refund me 50% of the order and he will send me my bonus plant but also to pick out two more plants and he will ship them in a faster manner.

Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers!

It feels like things are going to be ok.

lol!!!

That is a baby raccoon helping me.

They help me do everything in the garden because it turns up bugs and worms for them. He was trying to take the pot away from me so he could investigate what was in it. A mother raccoon had babies under the deck and although she is allusive the babies are not afraid.

I emailed NH Hosta requesting 'Majestic' as my replacement because that's the one they have available that looks closest to what I was trying to accomplish. This is majestic...
The instructions say it is a fast grower and will shine in my garden. I need shiny and glowing because my planting area is already so deep green and dull.

Why do my Hosta want to turn green?

It's pretty as long as it's just a few leaves. Do I need to put acidic fertilizer in the soil to keep them the right color?

Are there slugs in your area? That looks more like mechanical damage.

A lot of the variegated hostas are not stable and will revert back, best thing to do is to separate the green portion from the variegated.

I have finally discovered the exact right place for my 'Loyalist' Hosta. It has finally stopped deteriorating and it's starting to progress. It's sitting in one corner where it gets 3 hours of rich sprinkled morning sunlight between 7:30 am and 10:30 am. Then a heavier deeper sprinkled shade from 10:30 am to 12:00 and solid shade from the building all afternoon and evening. Loyalist is just so pretty. I wish it could be in a more noticeable spot but it will be a beautiful surprise when you turn that corner.

(Providing it over winters ok.)

What do I do with the green portion? Do I just plant it somewhere else for a green Hosta? Does it need shade also?

Yes, you can plant it, it will do fine. Green hostas are able to tolerate more sun.

Here's a sight that explains to me what mechanical damage is. Perhaps it was in the Hosta when I bought it and I didn't notice until now. It's ok. The leaves are still pretty.

That's what's important. Pretty healthy leaves!!!

I moved both Liberty away from the spot it was in where it was receiving 1 hour of direct afternoon sun... and scorching. I moved it to a morning sprinkles sun only. Both of them are doing much better. These plants had zero sun scorch on them when they arrived. This scorching was my doing but I seem to have stopped it.

I removed Diana remembered from the 4 1/2 hours of mid day sun and put it where Liberty used to be.... getting 1 hour of sun.

Diana has stopped scorching immediately and looks wonderful now.

I'm really not sure about this one... I had purchased it from Lowe's when I got Guacamole and was undecided about keeping it because it's very small leaves...

The garden center person said you know how a large a Hosta will be according to how large the leaves are.

I decided to keep it because I need something that would stay small enough not to block the sprinkler system.

The tag says it is 'Fire and Ice'.
But the pot says it is 'Rainforest Sunrise'

The leaves are thick and feel papery stiff.

I don't think it's either one of those. 😏

That's the downside to buying from local stores. So many tags have been wrong.

It's so hard to know for sure what it is... I want to know so I can take care of it properly.

Rainforest sunrise is supposed to be bumpy. This is smooth as glossy like crepe paper.

Twilight

The rapid grower award I would have to give to "Twilight".

This twilight was much smaller from a 4" pot...

and in 2 weeks it's almost the circumference of the "Liberty" (But with fewer leaves)

I wouldn't mind a half dozen twilight but there was only 1 at the store.

Wow! I've had a busy day and there's been too much to read it all today. But I'm encouraged by the response from NH Hostas. As someone said, they certainly had good reviews on Dave's Garden (though I'm not so sure there are any hosta growers over there any more. I subscription expires tomorrow and I'm not renewing). They ARE a long way from Utah and it would make a lot of sense to find a supplier closer. This has been a very hot summer and I'm sure safe shipping is a challenge. But for now, take the refund and bonus plant and see what they look like next spring.

BTW, Hallson Gardens (it's still a long way from you - in MI), sends wonderful plants and is worth checking out.

Finally, I agree. Those holes do not look like slug damage to me.
