I heard that 2017 is The Year of the Brug.
Maybe Brugs are like Wooly Bear cats where the width of the stripe predicts the length of winter...more Brugs = longer summer so they can bloom.

Harbringers of another record breaking warm year?

Remember that study of rats and mice that are attracted to cats once they are infected with cat borne toxoplasmosis ? Maybe there are some microbes at work here getting certain humans to cultivate and over winter Brugs?

Anyone know what pollinates a Brug?

HEYYY! Sally!!! I "resemble" your remark!!! Rolling on the floor laughing
It's dedication to sick and perverse need to single-handedly restock the flora of the planet! nodding I told you so!!! I told you so!!!

I am so tickled reading all youse comments on rooting Brugs.
YUP! They DO root easily! I have to try the cup idea.
So far--I have always used 5" nursery pots. Due to my "garbage picking
and saving EVERYTHING compulsion -- I have plenty of pots.

On the question on when to bring your sprouting Amaryllis up to warmer places-- I believe you can do that when you see the tips of leaves or buds
showing on top of the bulb.
A couple of mine are sprouting leaves--but I just put them in the shop a few weeks ago! Many times the leaves come first--and sometimes--that is ALL I get. I'll wait a while before I bring thee upstairs.

I am anxious to see how my Amaryllis perform as it was the 1st time I planted them outside. The bulbs sure looked robust and there were piles of roots.

HAY, SALLY!!! --Wanted to let you know that my Cobra Calathea is doing very well.
When I re potted it--I did some root trimming too. Pulled off some of the bulbous water-roots. Left enough so it can grow on.
It seems very happy in it's bigger pot and seems to be getting taller. Also--I see a lot of new shoots coming up from the roots. YAY!!

Here are a couple pictures I just took of it. This is where it lives for the winter--on top of a small ladder by my bright BR window.

Thanks Sally---so sorry you did not follow through with stuff you might have been able to do to make your plant better...
WHERE did you get the original plant????

Maybe spending the whole summer outside under my patio roof also contributed
to it's health. Lots of rain and humidity.
I believe the re-potting and root pruning made the biggest difference.
I have also been adding some of my VERY old "Electra" fertilizer ( ~ 35years) to soils this
summer as I transplant things. I still have a tub of ir. it is like powder...

Not sure how I would remove a small "start" of it???? Everything grows straight out
from the root-ball. Maybe after a few years???
Here--FYI---Gita

I had gotten that as a little clearance plant at Dutch Plant Farm. Thanks for the link, but I can't squeeze another plant in here.
Plant it and they will come.

“Little girl, why are you doing this? You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!” After a few moments thought, she bent down, picked up another starfish & hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied, “Well, I made a difference to that one!” Be the change you wish to see in the world. http://www.stillsthatspeak.com...

"Thank you, thank you, I'll be here through Saturday, then on to Poughkeepsie..."

Speaking of brugs- some of my cuttings still have fresh looking green bark, others look shrivelly and grey... thoughts on whether warmth helps or do they like cool?
Plant it and they will come.

In...shrivelly doesn't sound good. One of mine started resembling that at the top and it migrated south. I pitched that one.

@sallyg. Maybe the cuttings were too green? Anyway I have extras if yours don't make it.

By the way, I have just given them some systemic pesticides today. When I was working in Baltimore in the past several years, I kept the cuttings there and that was on the 11th floor. No bugs made it that high. Big Grin No such luck when cuttings are the house. So I thought I would be proactive for a change. Sticking tongue out

that is what I did, just took two tip cuttings back in September. They have barely grown though, they had flower buds on top, though I did my best to choose tips with no buds.
Plant it and they will come.
