I know, right? I'm so excited...I'm jumping around Hurray! saying 'it worked...it worked...who knew?' (said in Rudolph's voice after Clarice gives him a kiss https://www.youtube.com/watch?... ) Even Chloe was laughing at me!! You have to understand - I've only had success at rooting jasmines and hoyas...nothing else. Then I read horror stories about certain cultivars being difficult to root and I became a little disheartened....until I removed the baggies...woot woot! Course those couple of warmer days didn't hurt...once they're in cups they're placed on the plant shelving unit by those wonderful south/east living room windows.

You can’t begin to make a difference!” After a few moments thought, she bent down, picked up another starfish & hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Most of my brug cuttings feel like they are rooted at least at the bottom. I did pull one out. But the one showing most new leaves is a tip cutting that I took to work with a flower, and stuck in a Coke bottle of water, and ignored.
Plant it and they will come.

Brug updates?
I finally have new leaf growth on one of the 'tall pink' ones. I pulled two other cuttings from that pot and found zero roots. I keep staring hopefully at tight new leaf buds on two Maya cuttings that look healthy otherwise, in the sunniest window I have.
My happiest cutting was a tip cutting, cut for the flower, stuck in water in a Coke bottle, and ignored. Roots all over and new leaves.

Going to stick two cuttings of Schefflera umbrella tree in water, just to see, and because the whole plant is a mess and dropping leaves, I think only due to not quite enough water in the dry sauna that is Glen Burnie Library. I don't think I see any mites or webs.
Plant it and they will come.

Wow I really have a lot of reading to catch up with this thread. I will go back and read all the posts. Ric and I have a glass full of water rooted dwarf coleus that I am hoping to get into some soil. So far they are doing well..... (hush we don't want the spider mites to hear). Also I am getting out my OSP Ornamental Sweet Potatoes in Jan instead of Feb in hopes that they will be larger when I plant them in my containers this year. That is if any of them produce slips I feel I have a good chance. Also I haven't gotten a chance to give out Amaryllis this Christmas but I have tons of them still dormant. I hope to be home for at least 3-4 days in a row and just may get some of this done.

Life is "mind over matter". If I d
Sally--
Schefflera will drop leaves if they are watered too much. Let them go without watering for
a few weeks.... depending how big the plant is. They won't mind at all.

Also--I have tried tooting a top section cutting of the Schefflera--and it never rooted.
It sat there in water FOREVER!!!!! Then i got rid of it.
It may be be that it has NO nodes to root from IF you take just a cutting from the top.

My Scefflera is about 27 years old. it is huge! It is also dropping some leaves right now.
Just a change in light and temps--and no humidity to speak of. It sits in a corner of my LR.
by the steps leading up to the next level.
Every summer I take it outside...somewhere...anywhere--and just let Mother Nature care for it.
If it gets too sprawled--I will cut the whole plant back in the spring...to the nubs.
Within one summer season--it is already very well leafed out.

Do not be afraid to cut back plants...it usually invigorates them. (BUT--at the right time)

. It is a change to very dry air and lower, but decent, light. This was a gawdawful lopsided thing that had struggled with library life for years. This spring, I repotted, and made some cuttings, one of which took fine, the other zero zip zilch nada roots. So I'm just playing with it.

I had a 6 inch pot with three cuttings of your 'spanish' begonia, Gita, aka 'Sophie Cecile' or similar. It too did not like how fast it dried out there, and I gave it to a new employee who also likes plants. He was tickled pink! He can take it home and fuss away. And I unloaded an extra plant. tee hee.

Life is "mind over matter". If I d
Sally---I have a "plethera" (!!!) of this begonia rooted and rooting.
Same for the Beef Steak Begonia. It roots very quickly too.

Talking about plants--Sally!!!!

I went to "Valley View Gardens" ( in Hunt Valley) with Benita to gawk at all their
elaborate Christmas displays.
I wondered into their GH--and there were quire a few 6" pots of the "Cobra Calatheas"
for sale. Nice and fresh looking...$19.99. I thought of you! You should get one.

Me spend 20$ for a plant when I've barely found room for what I have? Nah thanks, not where I am in life right now.
I was thinking we might go visit the Conservatory in Baltimore this weekend though, maybe. Pity the neighborhood is so run down.
Plant it and they will come.

Yes, 3 sites that can get me into trouble if I stay too long and look around... B&H (All things Photography), Logees, and Pepper's Greenhouse. I can not wait till I can visit the last one again with some spending money. They've got a huge selection of very reasonably priced plants. Lots and lots of smelly goods to boot!!

As for my 'Brug Nursery' - I'll take a cell pic and share tomorrow. Of the gazillion solo cups there are 3 that I'm concerned about (of course we're only just into January). 2 of the 3 I have 2 of so I'm not so worried about those...but the 1 is an unnamed cultivar that I'm 'testing' (not sure if that was the word used)...maybe it was trialing...any who...the picture of the blooms was absolutely gorgeous and I was pretty dang excited that she even gifted the rooted cutting to me. Outside of that one - my only concern is space. You'll understand better when you see tomorrow's picture. "Houston, we have a problem" may be my byline here in a month or so.... Ohhhh to have such a 'problem' LOL

@5601Lisa It looks like the plant is still in a very small pot. You may want to pot it up around March/April and start watering it. I would cut the plant down to about 10" so that the new growths will give the plant a better form.

The pots I used for brugs are at least 18" - 20". Add a lot of moisture crystals in the potting soil so that the soil doesn't get dried out easily when it's 90F out there.

Good luck.

Pruned back my sweet bay, which got too dry while we were away over the holidays. I'm going to see if I can get some cuttings started in time for the seed swap... Putting them in water for a few days gives them a jump-start, according to Tom DeBaggio. They don't actually put out water roots but do get swollen bumps, which quickly sprout roots when they are potted. Given the quality of the leaves, they are more like stem cuttings LOL, but if they root new leaves should follow quickly.

That would be fun, good luck!

Remember I took 2 cuttings of pentas? All I could get had flower buds on the tips, and they've struggled along and bloomed, but look feeble.

One of my coleus plants is light green on the stems, but the stems look brownish at the base, like there's a creeping crud of some kind, vascular clogging thing, isn't looking real happy, so I'm considering taking small tip cuttings and tossing the base.. or tossing the whole thing.
Plant it and they will come.

Yeah, that brown is never a good sign... take tip cuttings but don't toss the base... you never know what will re-sprout, and meanwhile you have the insurance of the cuttings.

Lisa - as I'm sure you know you'll get buds above those Ys - so if you don't care about form and you want it to bloom sooner you might want to think about whether you cut it back or not. Absolutely put it into a larger pot once the days get a little bit longer and a little bit warmer. If you want to have a nice form, I would go ahead and try to root those that you cut with a Y above as those will bloom at a smaller size. Donner, correct me if I'm wrong

Chantell, absolutely right. The branches above the Y should bloom sooner. Lisa, my opinion was only mine. This plant grows fast. It will be fine no matter what you do nodding . I am just very heavy handed when it comes to pruning and weeding plants out before I wait to id them correctly Sticking tongue out .

Agree with Jill about the coleus, @sallyg.

Good luck with the cuttings, Jill. Is that the plant that makes everything taste sweet? If the cuttings take, you will be a very popular lady at the swap, Rolling on the floor laughing

No, that's "miracle fruit," that makes acidic things taste sweet. No luck so far with the couple cuttings I've tried from that one.

Plant it and they will come.
