The Crepe Myrtle is named after crepe paper. I've never understood why it is so widely misspelled as Crape Myrtle [sic]. I see no reason to repeat the error here. Shrug!

valleylynn said:Beard of Jupiter, I notice they don't make the b (from beard) upper case, is that correct? Not to be confused with Jupiter's Beard (Centranthus ruber).

On Sempervivum, Houseleeks or Live Forever is used much of the time. Hen and chicks (chicks not upper case) is associated with many other plants including sempervivum. I am not really sure which is correct in Hen and Chicks/Hen and chicks. I tried researching it, Wikipedia and many European sites show it as Hen and chicks. Nurseries show it as Hen and Chicks. ?????

Would be great if we could have all three of those common names. But I guess that would not look good in the semp listings. Blinking

To me, Hens and Chicks is a name, a common proper name, so I would list it all with capital letters, just looks better that way, just my humble opinion.

When you look at your semp database http://garden.org/plants/brows... I see the majority as Hen and Chicks (although the first 2 are just Hen and Chick, an only child? Hilarious! Anyways, the genus listing would look cleaner if it was all the common names were consistently listed the same. I love the clean look of the Rose, Iris and Daylily databases, http://garden.org/plants/brows... with just one common name.
Thinking of the future search function, what would the every day common gardener not knowing the proper genus name search for? Houseleek, Hen and Chicks? If they are all the same, the search will bring up the entire list and you can still have the additional common names added too.

It's true that the convention is to upper case the first letter of all the proper words in a common name.

So instead of "Crepe myrtle" it is "Crepe Myrtle". Thus I agree with Sue on "Hen and Chicks"...

Here in the US I believe it to be Hen and Chicks, but in most of the world it would be Houseleek. So what would be the best way of handling that? Can we still have both used for the search function without having them both showing in the cultivar listing?

I am sure Dave can add both across the board and the H&C appear first. That would be easier than going in one by one and changing it. If someone thumbs up one over the other, it can change but perhaps they can be locked in?

That would be great if Dave could fix it that way (Hen and Chicks), ;ermanent, but also making a search for Houseleek bring up the semps.

Yes, we just need Houseleek to be added to all appropriate plants. That's all the ones in the Sempervivum genus, right?

Yes that would be all in the Sempervivum genus. : )

For Jovibarba heuffelii it would be Beard of Jupiter.

For all other Jovibarba it would be Rollers.

I finished Sempervivum and J. heufelii.

I'll do Jovibarba (no species) once I get confirmation that it's Roller or Rollers.

I find it referred to as Rollers.

I just did a search on houseleek. Sure enough it came up with all the semps. What if some ones types in houseleeks (with an s at the end). It doesn't pick up on that.

If I do a search of Beard of Jupiter it comes up with this. http://garden.org/plants/searc...
Oops, I see if I do a search for Beard of Jove it comes up with all the J. heuffelii. : )
