This doesn't have anything at all to do with the encyclopedia entries. The encyclopedia entries are catch-all type informative pages that cover entire "groups" of plants.

As to Bob's direct question: I think he's pointing out that the latin names for some of these are incorrect. If the species of a plant is incorrect, it simply needs to be edited to bring it into a correct value.

Usually if a plant has multiple species in its parentage, then the species name is left out altogether. That's generally the standard approach. I just now did some googling around and I see that this plant is particular is referred to as Heuchera 'Berry Smoothie'. No species mentioned at all. As near as I can tell, any multi-species crosses in Heuchera can safely be edited to remove the species name altogether.

Sorry about that - in my mind they were somehow intercrossed. Seems the older I get...... Sad

Carolyn, you and Bob can propose name changes to remove the species from a cultivar if it's not needed so that it drops it in the right order in the alphabet. I got annoyed at seeing cultivars way at the end of the listing just because it had a hybrid species cross added to it so I just got in the habit of looking at the list one letter at a time, finding quite a few duplicates that way (in many of the genus listings)

I went through the semp database and removed specie names from all that are hybrids. It was just way to confusing, even through many places on the internet place the species name before the cultivar name. Now things are listed in a manner that makes sense. Thumbs up

Not to worry Evan, the species type still shows in the information. The ones I'm talking about are hybrids that are crosses of different species, sometimes several generations away from the original specie plants used. Some have one parent that is known in the cross, but not the other parent. These are all intentional hybrids.

Hi Lynn, After looking at couple of the hybrids I see the semps are of the "super" DB variety with loads of info. I reacted without researching. *Blush*

Not to worry, I totally understand your concern. Every ones input is how we catch the errors. I have made my share for sure. Sad
On the ones that are of a specific species type behind the hybrid, I put that info in, just not where it will show up in the listed name. Many of them we don't know what the parentage is. Sure wish I had some of the old records from way back, I think we would find more of that kind of info. Many of them are hybrids crossed with another hybrid. Many can be inter-specie crosses.

Thumbs up I was reading a blog about Cannas where they referenced catalogs (complete w/pics of certain pages) from the late 19th and early 20th century to make a point about a plants history and correct name. That's dedication.

Lyn, have you tried the RHS plant finder? This might help, they list resources or crosses if known. Search for Sempervivum, it brings them all up.

I think you already have the National Collection holders site here.. lots of info there.

I cross reference using a number of sites for the sempervivum, Fernwood is one of them. The RHS plant finder is only useful to me if I'm looking for a plant to buy. It doesn't give any information other than the name.
I think the semps are easy compared to some of the other plants being discussed. : )
I find a lot of very useful information on Horst Deihm' s web site.

I looked at a few Semps on the RHS Lynn, it doesn't seem to give information on crosses but maybe there is where it can be verified, there's a lot of them! It does give crosses on Astilbe where info is available, and whether it's an accepted name. For Sempervivum alone there's 1,152 records listed, I know there will be more but it's at least a good place to verify a name.

This is one of my reference sites on semps. I love that it is all on one page and easy to find.

I will investigate the RHS site further to see if it would be of help. Thank you so much Janet.

Dave, when Zuzu and I tried to move an image in a thread or from another database entry into one of the encyclopedia pages, they don't come up as an option. Zuzu has the perfect photo from another member for the main thumbnail for the Rose page and can't move it over there.

This is happening because with the main plant entry, there's nothing really to search for, so it can't come up. What I need to do is make a way for you to directly specify the plant ID number into that "move an image" form for this kind of purpose. I'll do that soon.

Okay, I have this working now. If you know the plant ID of the plant you want to import an image over to, you can enter just the ID number and it'll find it for you.

How do you find the ID number? Go to the plant in question, and load it in your browser. You will see in the URL field a number after "/plants/view/" and that number is the ID of the plant.

The address for the main Rose entry is:

Roses (Rosa)

and therefore the ID for the rose entry is 181506.

So go to import an image and enter that number in, and it'll find the rose entry for you.

Let me know if you have any questions about this!
