Winter Sowing
That is my plan with the Bartlettina, I have it in a pot right by the garage so it can duck in there with cold snaps. But here we only usually have a few times over the winter where it gets really cold. It might be a good houseplant but I really have no idea. I also must confess I have not tried to sprout the seeds. This is a Mexican cloud forest plant, so likely just ordinary methods, but I don't know. Like some other cloud forest plants, it seems pretty resistant to droughty conditions, but sometimes cloud forests don't get very hot. Anyway it looked very nice here, and still looks fine (I have had two very light frosts only. RickCorey is I think just enough closer to the Puget Sound he has not frosted at all yet.

Mary: true. I think I'm something like 1-2 miles from Possession Sound, and maybe all the auto exhausts near me provide extra warmth. I put one extra blanket on the bed ... but not the winter comforter yet.

So I have my list with all my 5 stars, ready to get those, and instead I decided to look "one last time". Wound up with one I had starred and 3 others that I saw and said "ooh, that looks neat, let's get it instead."

Oh well, they looked pretty in the pictures. Besides, I'm sure some of my other starred ones will be there tomorrow.

Mary, that's a gorgeous plant! (Loved your "advertisement"). I would love to hear how this plant does for you, esp'lly if you treat it as a houseplant, which would be my only option. This is how I find out about plants I never heard of before, from all you expert gardeners and seeds listed, that I then research. I have to admit that after last year's living room filling up as a "jungle" (per complaints from my family), I am striving for as few plants as possible to overwinter. I'm not as good at houseplants as outside. I took my mandevilla to work and plant on bringing a few more plants there to enjoy the big East window with lots of light

Has anyone grown gerberas inside or overwintered them -- do they bloom inside, I'm wondering? I transitioned mine from garden to inside (2 of them) and they are not looking thrilled.

Val, I have a friend north of me that grows gerberas indoors. They bloom just fine for her in a big western facing window. But that is in the summer & fall. I'd think if you want them to survive the winter they couldn't be kept on a windowsill unless they had a heat source nearby and lots of extra water/humidity.

Thanks, Elena

I also have grow lights I can put them under. Dont think I can do the humidity, tho as the room I use has the furnace as well so plenty of heat in the winter, but dry. Hmmmmmmm

I have orchids growing in a similar area under grow lights. I just mist them heavily before I go to work, after work and before bed. They do just fine! Or you can just put the pots on a tray filled with stones and water so the pots aren't actually sitting in the water. That way when the heat comes on the water evaporates and you get instant humidity right around those plants.

Dayily cross pictures are nearly complete for my listings!!! I've put in all of the pictures I can stand to work on right now...I've spent all of my time today editing and posting the pictures, so I need a break. It's just soooooo time-consuming.

The system did interesting things with the way that each of us (who offered daylily seeds) happened to create our listings...

All of my daylilies are listed as "Daylilies:" and the semicolon places it separately from Elena's and from Leslie's daylily listings.

Here are a couple peeks at what I have listed:

Jim's Pick x 'John Kulpa's Seedling 2 - Bolash'
Thumb of 2016-11-02/DogsNDaylilies/086659
"JK2" is a color-changing daylily, so I wanted to put it on nearly EVERYthing in my garden to ensure that I got some seeds out of it. It turns out, it is extremely fertile both ways, so I ended up with more seeds from it than I could ever hope to plant. Hilarious!

Royal Frosting x Jocelyn's Oddity
Thumb of 2016-11-02/DogsNDaylilies/7309f4
Two daylilies with great substance....Royal Frosting brings the high bud count to the table and Jocelyn's Oddity brings the unique form.

Little Grapette x Ginger Cookie
Thumb of 2016-11-02/DogsNDaylilies/fe8c8b
If you like itty bitties, this is a good one for you! Both are smaller daylilies that are super cute.

I have a lot more listed, so go take a look! Rolling my eyes.

Are daylilies easy to grow from seed? How do you get so many - by pollinating them yourself? If I get enough chances, I would like to try them. I have 2 acres to fill with flowers and I love lilies. Thank You!

Terri, they are quite easy to grow. Better still, daylilies are extremely hardy (generally speaking) once established! If you have acres to fill, do daylilies! You won't regret it. They are very addicting and part of why my husband and are looking at moving is so I can have more space to grow my daylilies.

Edited to add:
Yes, I pollinate them myself. The pollinating part is quite easy, it's the planning/labelling/database entries that are time-consuming and occasionally difficult.

I actually felt the "fun" tonight! I can't believe what an awesome way this is to get seeds. I am learning a lot of new flowers too.

@ediblelandscapingsc neither the Cubs nor the Indians have been to - let alone won - the World Series in a very long time. But my home team is of course the Atlanta Braves, so I am behind the National League team.

@DogsNDaylilies it's so funny that you mention moving for more flowers space - I did the same thing! Now I have tons of room and I need flowers so it's not so barren. I would love to start some seeds inside but the heating mats, growing lamps, etc. are all so very expensive. I wonder if a classified section for this site has been discussed?

Thank you for all the seed offers - I won some from both of you!

Terri Thank You!
