Container Gardener Garden Art Sempervivums
Beautiful day today. Tons of plants in my garden have dead-leaf-wreaths, the velvets are particularly good at doing that and they're unfortunately my favorites Sighing! Almost every seedling in the two generations worth I have from 'Exorna' sheds it's outer leaves for the winter. I do have these two little ones which have 'Exorna' as a grandparent and still look good though, they may be too young to show me dead leaves but some of their siblings don't look as clean…

Here's the strong red with dense cilia fringing I've shown here before, looking fantastic as always…

This is a small velvet I'm very excited about, no winter rot, nice caramel coloring, and LOTS of chicks…

here's my best non-nugget yellow, it took a little winter damage but I think it's still passable, do you?

Sol, I love seeing current photos at this time of year. All of those look like they came through winter in good condition. Hurray!
I look forward to seeing them when in their full spring colors.

With spring ((hopefully) being just around the corner I have been checking my seedlings to see how everybody is doing and I am pleased to say we are starting to show COLOR!!! Most of them don't look much different than plants already "out there" but as long as they have some color I can sell them at plant sales and the consignment store.

So, I will start with my 2021 seedlings.
Gold Nugget #1 - This is the one that had the nice peachy tones last year. They faded during winter and I am hoping they will come back. Could turn out to be name worthy.
Thumb of 2024-02-25/MelissaHopper/f44142

Gold Nugget #2 Has some nice color but not very vigorous so will probably get sold.
Thumb of 2024-02-25/MelissaHopper/441a03

Gold Nugget #3 A nice healthy plant that is producing babies and has some nice color but not really outstanding.
Thumb of 2024-02-25/MelissaHopper/87cac0

Gold Nugget #4 Another healthy plant with nice color so who knows.
Thumb of 2024-02-25/MelissaHopper/835d58

Gold Nugget #5 This is all it does. Doesn't grow, doesn't produce offsets, just sit there and changes color. Hanging on to it out of pure stubbornness.
Thumb of 2024-02-25/MelissaHopper/32df26

Gold Nugget #6 This one looks better than my original Gold Nugget. Healthy plant, good color and produces offsets. Possibly name worthy.
Thumb of 2024-02-25/MelissaHopper/3438e6

Jabba The Hut #1 I don't see anything special here and so see some rot. Not good.

Wow! There are some really exciting things in those seedling, Melissa.
GN#1 is interesting with all that dark coloration and bright centers. I can't wait to see it in April and May. That might be a really stunning semps.
No telling how all the other GNs will color up by May. They only ones that would be a no go for me are #2 & #5. They others have real potential.
How sad that the 2021 'Jabba The Hutt' and 'Persephone' seedlings have so much rot. Did all of them do that?
How very interesting that the 2022 'Persephone' seedling show no signs of rot. And your 'Purple Passion' seedlings are looking great.
Keep up the great work. Hurray!

Lynn, I totally agree with your assessment about the Gold Nugget seedlings. #1 gets a real peachy color in the center and is unusual, I think. And #6 looks better than my Gold Nugget does. And #3 and #4 have potential. #2 and #5, not so much.

I was disappointed in the rot in the Persephone seedlings. But then I am really hard on my seedlings and sort of make them fend for themselves. And I even had this guys gritted. Now I have had some rot in my 2022 Persephone seedlings but not much. Pretty much all the Jabba and Pers seedlings
for 2021 have some degree of rot.

Yup, the 2022 seedlings are starting to really color up. I just gave you a small sample of what I have. I also have seedlings from Kismet, Lion King and Jungle Shadows. When it gets a bit warmer I will start taking photos of small batches and posting them.

My poor 2023 seedlings are still all crammed in their roasting pans together but they don't seem to mind it. I want to wait for bit warmer weather before I start seperating them. Don't want their little roots to get cold!

Melissa, I am doing the same thing with my September 2023 seedlings, waiting for warmer weather before transplanting. Of course they are not anywhere the size yours must be now. Mine are still just tiny seedlings. As tiny as they are, some are starting to show color. I think we are both looking forward to the time when we can give each seedling it's own space.
I need to plant some of my 2023 seeds. Not sure which ones yet.

Lynn, I have that same issue. I just listed all the bloomstalks that I harvested last year for this year's seedlings and came up with the following.

Choctaw
Erwin2
Pip
Fiesta
Steel Appeal
Lilac Time
Pink Lotus
Black
Peggy
Killer
Jade Blush
Persephone
Borscht
Lynns Rose Gold
Blue Whale
Red Zinger
That's 16 total. Realistically I need to only plant some of these, now to just decide which ones. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I would plant the ones that have come through this last winter season unscathed. That might give you a much better chance of producing tougher sempervivum.
I have these and all came through with no rot. They did sustain some hail damage when the ice storm started, but are already growing new leaves from the center of the rosettes. Soon the ugly hail spots will be gone.

I did remove 2 of my LRG seedlings a few weeks ago because of rot, all the rest are solid and healthy. Some have no hail damage.
My 'Jade Blush' seedlings are very healthy, the only one that suffered from rot was the tube seedling. I did take a couple of the undamaged offsets and replant them.

I certainly appreciate the input. There is no way that I can plant all those seeds.

Here are updated photos of my 2023 seedlings. A lot of color showing up.

Melissa, great looking bunch of seedlings. They look nice and healthy and some are looking promising. I still love that tiny 'Rifka' seedling. Hope it starts offsetting. The 'Rockoon' series are shy at putting out offsets, but they are interesting semps.

I will try to get some updated seedling photos if we have a break in the rain. My 'Rifka' seedlings are still just tiny specks.

It stopped raining/snowing long enough for me to get a few photos of the seedlings. These are 3 years old this spring and have come through a difficult winter this year. Looking forward to seeing what they look like later this month and on into June and summer.

None of these have been cleaned up, this is how they came through winter.

I am sorry to hear that Melissa. Our semps are so confused by this years winter weather. We were supposed to get the same as you today, but it did not happen, just rain and a bit warmer weather today.

Alex, LCH#1 does have some shrinkage in the winter months, but absolutely no rot. Does get some crispy leaves from the drought season but takes care of it on its own. It did sustain some hail damage, that will disappear as soon as the growing season starts up. Glad you like it.

And it snowed again last night. It's like I have some kind of stupid polar vortex hovering over my house. Of course, it doesn't help any that I live at 1,000 feet. All the folks down in the flatlands are just getting rain.
