October is Harvest Month, so our thumbnail photo for this month is Prairie Harvest. Coincidentally, Prairie Harvest is also our Rose of the Day because today is World Vegetarian Day.

A special Rose of the Day, 'Little Artist,' in memory of Sharon Brown, who has passed away.

Sharon, a teeny-tiny lady with a huge heart, was an artist who produced wonderful paintings.

She was a major contributor to this site from the beginning. The new members may not be as aware of her contributions as the rest of us. She had been less active here recently, but was still quite active on Cubits. Scroll down to the bottom of her profile page here and take a look at all of the articles she wrote for the site. Incredible!

The Cubits list is even longer:

This is one of my favorites of Sharon's paintings. I couldn't find a larger image, unfortunately, although I know I have one somewhere in my e-mails. It's evocative and enigmatic: At first it looks like plants growing in a container and then you notice that they're actually beings of some sort -- some similar to humans, some similar to animals. It could serve as something like a Rorschach test, I suppose. It's anyone's guess whether the beings are dancing with joy or rebelling against the tight confines of the container or ????

When she learned how much I loved this painting, she started working on a similar painting for me that would depict cat-like figures hidden in the blooms of a flowering tree. Unfortunately, Sharon always worked on dozens of paintings at once, moving from one to another according to her mood. I don't think she ever finished the one she was painting for me. It's a great loss. In general, the loss of Sharon is hard to bear. She will be missed.

What a huge loss for us all. Sharon was really a driving force behind Cubits and here as well, a source of infinite experience and wisdom. She leaves a big hole in our forum lives.

I just read about her passing a few minutes ago, feeling so sad right now... That painting is beautiful.

My camera doesn't seem to like photographing reds! That is on the auto settings. Probably just me D'Oh! but today I was messing around with the white balance and manage to get Black Baccara just right - problem is the background is too green Shrug! Bet there are more experienced photographer who can fix pics like this

That is a perfect picture of Black Baccara, which is so difficult to capture on camera in its true color. Well done!

Hmmm, a similar color distortion... But it's the amazing bloom color that matters.

It is the bloom colour that matters but it would be great if you could get every thing right. I also find purples and mauves a little difficult - they come out blue! I don't like editing my photos afterwards because I don't really know what I am doing and, more often than not, the auto correct just messes everything up. Maybe I should put a photo course on my bucket list Hilarious!

I know I have always had a hard time with reds. However, I have old cameras, and the newer ones are supposed to be more color accurate.

I agree I like the way it lacks pinkish undertones like a lot of oranges do.

Great shot of Black Baccara Sharlene! The green background doesn't look overly intense on my monitor. Love the way you were able to capture the velvety quality!

I'm using Black Baccara roses for a wedding in a couple of weeks. Nice to use some deep colors for a change. Seems I've been working with pastels since spring, and 90% of those have been pink and/or blush. I love pink shades for weddings, but it started feeling like that movie 'Groundhog's Day', each week seemed like a repeat of the last! Hilarious!

I find the colour on Pumpkin Patch really interesting which is probably not all that surprising when you consider the fact Honey Dijon is the pollen parent.

Neal, I would love to see that bouquet when its done. I am sure it will be absolutely stunning! What will you be using with it?

Ah, that's where Pumpkin Patch gets that burnished undertone!

I'll try to remember to take a photo of the bouquet. This one is very simple, just tight clusters of Black Baccara roses for all the bouquets. The bridesmaids are wearing navy dresses, and I recommended a little white in the bouquets for some contrast but the bride didn't go for it. Seems like such a dark color against another very dark color may not be very photogenic. The centerpieces and church arrangements will also have white hydrangeas which should look nice against the navy tablecloths.

Gorgeous photos of Black Baccara, Sharlene and Suzanne. If any of you have Photoshop, you can adjust individual colours by going to image//adjustments//hue/saturation and then selecting the colour you want to adjust from the drop down menu (which starts with 'master').

Photoshop would be cheating on the bloom, perhaps, but surly not for the background.
