I was surprised, this is in the Century Plant family, but it does not get near as huge as my Blue Century Plants got. Thank goodness for that. I wish I had money to buy more, this would look nice in a clumped setting, out in the desert landscaping. I guess the pups will come as it grows.

It shouldn't be anymore, it was rare initially but I have one plant and got about 6 pups from it this past year.

So time to show my winter succulent casualties:
As always the flapjacks hate the winter cold...but it is always forgiving, and starting to return and showing some new babies/leaves :

This Crassula Ovata Gollum had it quite bad.. Sad however, on close look, it seems getting back on its feet gradually..stem/branches still look sturdy, at least not flopping yet!

This jade plant is highly stressed colored, some odd leaves wrinkling, but otherwise holding on:

But these succulents are thriving in the cold! Happy to see bigger and wider rosettes with tinges of pink.. Big Grin

So far mine are doing very well outdoors, but we have not had a single drop of rain. So I have had excellent control of how much water they get. I'm afraid if we do get some good spring rains, I may be in trouble =(

Tarev I notice you have posted zone 7a & zone 9b. What are your minimum cold winter temps like where the above plants are growing?

I think she's listing both her USDA zone and her Sunset Western Climate zone.

Tarev, why do you have a thermometer poked into your soil on that potted plant? I've never seen anyone do that before.

Big Grin Tee is right I am posting both the USDA and Sunset Western Climate Zone. As to our minimum cold winter temps, for this year we have gone as low as 21F, which does not usually happen. We usually hover between 38 and 40 F. It has gone chilly but drier than usual.

Oh I have put that thermometer in the potted plant, just curious as to how hot does these plants in this row by our garden fence gets it when the sun starts bearing down on them, and I find that although the ambient temperature is cooler, the heat that they actually get is 10 to 15 degrees more. So most of my more heat tolerant plants are there. Especially when summer comes in and I can easily see the gauge easily over 90F. Luckily it is mostly half day, by that time the canopy of the trees makes the area cooler in summer. Plus there is a little led light there on top of the thermometer..not too bright but just some light at night Smiling Our temps sizzle to the 100F mark during summertime too.

Thank you for the info Tarev. Thumbs up

A few times this winter in was in the teens, but mostly in the upper 20's and low 30's for the night time lows. A few days that stayed in the freezing range.

This winter I decided to see if some of mine would make it through a winter outdoors. I put them on our covered deck where the rain wouldn't get to them.
Here is the results. I am pleasantly surprised.
Echeveria derenbergii Lots of dead stuff, but the rosettes laying on the potting soil look very healthy. Looks like some of the stems are still alive also. Hurray!

Graptopetalum paraguayense Appears to have made it in relatively good shape.
Thumb of 2012-02-10/valleylynn/eb3f97

These three I don't have an ID for, but they made it. Hurray!

Ok, so finally got everything else potted up that needed potted up. I am out of pots and cactus to pot up. I do have some Dracena I need to pot up, kind of a combination planting, but that is a whole other forum, and my very last pot I have left that has been sitting empty in the back yard for three years.

Beautiful plants and they go well with the pots. I think the blue is a setting on the camera, the white point is off.

LOL! Funny you should ask. These plants are under my patio, which has a greenhouse awning on top. I made it this way so I could put plants that prefer bright shade in our hot summers there, and grow them without worrying about sunburn. I didn't want a solid roof, because then it's too dark to grow much of anything under there. Here is a picture, where you can kind of see the top of the patio.

Maybe for the purpose of taking pictures you could bring them out from under the awning. Your pictures are very good and could be a nice addition to the database.

I'll take more pictures tomorrow with my digital camera and move them to a shady spot out from underneath the patio. These pictures were taken with my cell phone.
