There are a few folks on the LA (cough-cough bugsauce) that buy everything in sight. I have no problem bumping their bids. I may have done it for the sport of it on occasion.

It IS an auction though, and auctions go to the highest bidder, so while I really want to win, I can't complain when I lose, either. I have more than enough plants as it is, and they all come back around. The 5-minute window eliminates sniping, which I feel is a lot better than the Ebay system, where people can out-compete other bidders via proxy bidding software.

James I agree. There's no feeling worse than seeing someone winning the same cross for a third or less than what I pay. You learn as you go. If it is the last one then it's on.

There's a reason they bring out lots of bread, salad and pasta first at a crab feed!

I love the analogies Hurray!
Here is how you tell when someone is determined to win an auction. They go in and up their bid twice.

Was that link supposed to lead somewhere, Mike? It ends in ... When I pull it up, it just shows a list of auctions. Thinking
Hardy hibiscus are a hobby, but daylilies are an obsession.

Sscape said:I do not buy single fans. Even if a "double fan" comes as two separate fans, at least you have a better chance of ending up with that cultivar in your garden after a couple years. I have lost way too many single fans--will not do it any more.
I also do not buy many Evergreens. Here in northern North Carolina we usually have enough Winter to test hardiness. Too many Evr's have had that quality bred out of them over the years, and the problem is only getting worse, since the reason it happened in the first place is our insatiable apatite for New and Different Colors and Forms at the expense of Vigor and Hardiness. Any Evr's that I get are now potted and placed next to my house where the heat from the house helps them to survive. If we are going to get into the teens some night, they also get covered with sheets/blankets as well. Evr's are also more likely to bring Rust into your garden since the fungus survives in any green plant tissue. Evr's never go dormant. They just get beat down to a stub that is still green (hence the Ever in the name). Evr's need to be bred for increased hardiness, and resistance to Rust. This should be the main objectives of all daylily hybridizers who work with them, if they truly love this flower. We the purchasing public, should demand this, and not encourage this with our money.

Hi, Greg. I'm also in Winston. Are you a member of the local AHS/ADS? I had intended to join after payday, but I think the $ I slated for that have been spent on the LA!

I always fee the people who bid twice just dont know how it works. I feel they are afraid their high bid will kick right in.

Would you be interested in teaching an online course in self-control?? I already have 17 LA plants coming, and that's not counting the regular daylily websites I've ordered from. *Blush*
