Yes, Guy Fawkes' Day is still huge here - the tradition is for children to make a guy out of old clothes stuffed with straw or anything else, then they sit outside with it asking passers-by for a 'Penny for the guy'. Then in the evening you build a bonfire, put the guy on the top, bake potatoes in the fire, and set off lots of fireworks.
Our neighbours had a bonfire party last night, and tonight there will be lots more...

Sounds like fun - hope it's not raining there like it is here - would really spoil the fun! A bonfire wouldn't have a chance here tonight - raining cats and dogs!

I don't have a guy to top it off, but I do have a bonfire in the making.

No rain, but it's very cold (42 F or 6 C). Sad I think we might decide to stay in with a glass of wine by an open fireplace...

Porkpal, I have a pile which would make a great bonfire but big fires are prohibited here Thumbs down

Mika - an evening by the fire with a glass of wine sounds comfy.
We are a bit warmer - still 9C - but the forecast for next week is not nice!

I was just thinking my dizziness is getting unbearable and my dogs started crying and then one jumped up on my lap. Turns out we just had another earthquake. My daughter called from Kansas city, 180 miles north of me, saying her building was shaking. The earthquake was south of me in oklahoma! That's 2 I've felt today!
I'm working on a presentation for my local Rose society, talking about places to order roses. I have never ordered from Heirloom, RVR, Roses Unlimited or Rose Petals. My only experience with Hortico was not good. What's the general consensus on the ones I don't know first hand? I have photos of what was shipped to me with other sellers.

There was an earthquake? Didn't feel a thing. Not complaining though.

I've ordered from Roses Unlimited and they sent good plants. That was a few years ago. Otherwise last place I ordered from and who sent excellent roses was A Reverence for Roses.

Cindi ... one of the things that came up in a conversation with some one who lives back east who was complaining about the roses she received from Regans this year that I thought you might want to share in your talk ... altho' you did not mention Regan's in your post.

Others have complained about the quality of plants they have received from Regans either here or on other forums. Regans is located in California. They do not grow their own roses. They get their roses from growers in California. California is in its fifth year of drought. Like any other agricultural crop, the quality of the plants is going to be impacted by the drought conditions. It simply does not make sense to blame the nursery.

So any nursery which is receiving plants from the California growing grounds is likely to have lower quality plants than they would have in non-drought years.

The reason I've brought this up is that it seems like no one seems to think of roses as an agricultural crop. There are good crop years, OK crop years and lousy crop years. Something to think about.

As for the nurseries you have listed above, they are not receiving inventory from the California growing grounds. I cannot comment on the quality of their plants.

Thanks, Lyn. Certainly a factor to consider.
We're supposed to hit 38 degrees tonight, and I'm wondering if I should cover my blooming Louise Estes rose. It is a maiden rose I planted in June or July. Everything is fairly well watered already.

Neal, that Ring of Fire is such a cute little bloom, very distinct. Can never mistake it for anything else.

I found two possible roses for today: Honoring Vietnam Veterans (US) or Remembrance (Can), however we don't have pictures of them...

Suzanne ...

I think this photo that you put in the NGA database shows why Ralph named the rose 'Ring of Fire'

It's a beautiful photo, but when you see the rose in person, it really glows ... Smiling

Sue - Am I allowed to be jealous? Great pics.

Porkpal, seems like I am not the only one who has been missing Zuzu's rose of the day.
Has anyone heard how she is?

Zuzu is fine but had a computer crash. A tech was going to come this week and see if it can be recovered and to see what her options are. She had borrowed a friends laptop but was having some problems using it. Hopefully she'll be back soon.
