Both roses seem perfect for this day. I too love the unusual color of Brownie.

Zuzu, so happy to see your post this morning that your world is full of color! Hurray! Spring is going to be fantastic!

Edith's Darling has just been so so here. I think the little leaves are kinda pretty, dainty and lacy, but it does seem it would almost qualify as a miniature.

Zuzu Hurray! Hurray! So glad you have your technicolor vision back!
My Watercolor Home Run rose was teeny tiny and didn't make it even a month. I totally forgot about that one. Neal, I was assuming the small leaves on Edith were a defect, or the result of some neglect on my part. Never thought it might just be a rose with tiny leaves.
Super cold here today, and I just remembered I didn't cover my Red Impression. Oops!

Great news Zuzu - so glad all went well! Just remember no heavy lifting! It is so easy to forget!

@CindiKS Red Impression??? That a new one???

gemini_sage said: Sharlene, when budding onto a rootstock, do you find it best to use a small seedling for the rootstock? I'm curious if a more mature plant with a large root system is acceptible to bud onto. I've wondered if the rootstock is too large or vigourous if it promotes sucker growth.

@gemini_sage Neal, from what I have experienced, I can tell you that I find it easier to bud onto younger wood. It is not impossible to bud onto mature plants but you have to dig down to below the growth and the sap has to be flowing really well. (It is advised to water any rootstock well before grafting anyway) The only problem you will find with the more mature stock is that the bark is thicker and is likely to spilt when you lift it to insert the bud-eye.

There is so much info on the internet and I am sure you have done a bit of your own research, but here is a link to an article which I found interesting. http://arsyankee.org/budding.h...

@sunnyvalley oops I meant to say Red Intuition. That's what I get for trying to type before I've had coffee.
Thanks for the link! I'm determined to learn how to bud roses this year.
Kim Rupert sent me some seeds, and I'm studying that whole process also. I have a few cuttings started in my sunroom, and an ongoing experiment in growing roses on Fortuniana in an area where it's not recommended. I'm glad I kept those indoors because surely they would have perished in this extreme cold wave.

Thanks Sharlene! That makes sense, the outer layers of younger plants would be more pliable and easier to work with. And thanks for the link, looks like clear, concise direction- I've bookmarked it!

Cindi, can't say I was very good about caring for the garden this summer, but a couple of other new roses planted alongside Edith's Darling this spring grew very vigorously, so I assumed the small leaves are a trait of the variety. How has Red Intuition performed for you? It's a rose I've worked with as a cut flower and I found it exquisite!

What a lovely shade of pink, Zuzu. How is your recovery coming along?
Neal, Red Intuition is a sickly, pathetic rose bush. The blooms are stunning. It had all of 3 blooms this year, which is 2 more than last year, so progress is good! This is my 3rd and final try with this finicky baby. I really ought to stay away from florist roses.
Do you know the name of this florist rose?

Wow - I really like that! For some or other reason, I am not particularly partial to pink roses - lot of P's there - but this is a lovely colour! Quite different to the pinks I have growing in my garden: Queen Elizabeth, Paris Charme, Carina, Angela and Deborah. This is such a beautiful soft pink! Pity there aren't more pics in our data base but if anyone is interested, there are a lot on HMF http://www.helpmefind.com/gard...
I like this one especially
http://www.helpmefind.com/rose...

This rose was entered into the ADR trials but did not receive the award. It did however make it onto their list of recommended roses from the evaluations from 1995 -1998 and 1999 - 2002. Link in German but for those who might want to have a look http://www.adr-rose.de/frame_e...

This is one that is going on my wish list - first entry for next years order Whistling

Cindi - was busy writing while you posted! Neal is more likely to know what your florist rose is. I find it extremely difficult to identify florist roses because there are so many similar roses. Have a look at this website http://www.cutflower.com/pages...

Wish you luck with the rooting!

Cindi, is that what the florist industry calls a "spray rose"? ...which I think is just a term for a floribunda with smallish blooms. Kinda looks like multiple blooms on a stem in the photo.

No, that's just the way I had stuck them in the vase. It's a hybrid tea, single blooms on long stems.

Cindi, the results of the post-op exam one day after the surgery were so impressive that the one-week post-op exam was canceled and I don't have to go back for a whole month. This might be the best thing that has ever happened to me. I don't remember ever having such clear vision. It's so bizarre to have an age-related problem that improves my life so dramatically instead of making it worse.

Does this mean you will not need to get new glasses, Zuzu ?

No need whatsoever for glasses, Lyn. My vision, close up and distant, is perfect. I will wear sunglasses when I'm outside, however, because I've noticed many times that my glasses have protected my eyes when I've accidentally plunged my face into a plant or had a branch veer into my face. My cats are always with me when I'm gardening, and they rub up against plants and cause the branches to whip around when I'm not expecting it. I'm always getting my hair "combed" by thorns. Hilarious!

Thanks for letting me know. I've been putting off the surgery simply because I didn't want to cough up the bucks for new glasses too. Rolling my eyes.

glad your vision is improved Zuzu Smiling

Cindi, you mentioned Red Intuition. I purchased him at our local rose auction even though he's nothing like what I would normally go for I was on a roll; Hybrid Tea, red and wimpy lol! I am actually a fan of his striping but yeah I think I got three blooms from him last year as well Sticking tongue out I'm hoping he steps it up it. I actually bought him hoping to use his pollen as Red doesn't seem to keep hips either.
