Thanks for stating this simple fact, zuzu. This is my learning too during this year. With a bit of focused effort, common sense and knowledge, I achieved more this year than what I couldn't in the previous years even after spending lot of money.

Here is another locally bred HT rose that I wanted to share. Very large sized (4.5 to 6 inches) dark fuchsia red blooms with deep or medium pink outer petals. Strong old rose fragrance. The breeder has named it "Tipu Sultan". I am very impressed with the performance of this rose. He blooms far more profusely than his parent Deep Secret and has a stronger fragrance. Tipu Sultan's performance in fall has been particularly good.

Few photos of Tipu Sultan from the last month.

zuzu, could you be kind enough to create an entry for this rose. I will upload more photos.

best regards

As far as I know Syl Arena was the only vendor that carried Delbard roses in the US. Unfortunately, due some serious mixs up in the rose fields, Syl ended up going out of business several years ago.

He sold quality plants and I had several of his roses when I lived in southern California. I am sorry now that I did not bring them with me when I moved.

Lyn, I think you're mistaken about the Delbard roses. I didn't buy any of mine from Syl Arena. Delbard roses were always carried by Ashdown, Wayside Gardens, J&P, Vintage Gardens, and many other nurseries. In fact, some of them (Altissimo, Camara, and Gingersnap) were even sold by Home Depot and other big-box stores.

I am sure you are right, Zuzu. I think Syl was just the first to carry their roses. He had a personal relationship with the family and for a while they gave him an exclusive to carry their roses.

Love the colour on that rose - sort of russet-orange touched with pink! The name is rather appropriate.
As a child, I could spend hours looking through my Kaleidoscope!

I wonder, do kids these days still know what a Kaleidoscope is???? Shrug!

The perfect name indeed! I love how this photo shows all the colors:

I still get easily enrapt with kaleidoscopes when I see them. Just last week I was with a friend shopping for some children and suggested a shop that carries all sorts of unusual toys, books, gifts, and various oddities. They have nostalgic toys that bring back a lot of memories. Of course I had to play with the kaleidoscopes for a while!

I like the term 'nostalgic toys' and it is good to hear that you are still able to buy them. I think it is good for kids to play with something which is not digitised, battery-run or has an HD camera!! Sad

I am glad I am not playing Santa Claus any more. It would be no fun to buy the toys of today. I too still love kaleidoscopes.

We took part in a Shriners toy run this weekend, and raised over $3354 for toys for children. It was fun shopping for toys! My purchases met Sharlene's criteria--plain old Legos, teddies bears, dolls that do nothing. No batteries required. Lovey dubby Hope somebody enjoys these simpler things.
Zuzu, so glad everything is working out so well. Hurray!

@Rebekah are you experiencing get the cold snap that Vancouver WA is getting? If so you may need to protect Red Intuition. My Neal Diamond rose is almost as puny as Red, and actually Neal is more disease prone. I keep buying the stripes because I love novelty plants, but I'm about done with the primary Donna, stingy blooming, half dead cover girls. Ketchup and Mustard falls in that category too. I fell for the hype on that one, and am totally disappointed.

Well we did get around 4 inches of snow though its all turned to rain now. I do plant my roses with grafts below the soil surface and I gave Red Intuition a small pile of compost around the base, Hopefully that enough. Crossing Fingers!
Funny you mentioned Neil Diamond. After saying Red Intuition is not typically my type.....Well let me just say again I was on a roll at the auction. I have a standard of Neil Diamond next RI and Philatelie all planted together in a raised bed. I agree with you Neil Diamond is more disease prone. I was hoping the height would help prevent soil born illness but no luck there. Still I aim to use them for hybridizing with something more robust. Though because Red Intuition is a sport it makes me think it might be striped due to a virus similar to the one spread around by aphids which created the once famous striped dutch tulips. From what I understand its possible for the virus to become part of the genetic code so the stripes can be passed down but the resulting offspring may also be weaker because of it.

@Rebekah

You might be interested in reading this article by Ralph Moore. He mentions that striping caused by virus is not an inheritable genetic trait. He also comments on sports.

yes I have read it, and it is also a discussed topic on the rose hybridizers forum. Quiet an interesting subject. Smiling I especially like Jim Sproul's take on the subject.
What I think may be the case with Red Intuition, is at best an educated guess, but I seems plausible to me a non science major simply looking at the roses heritage which seems to be without stripes and seeing a lack of vigor, a commonality with the virused tulips or even roses with mosaic virus. The fact the RI doesn't seem to be involved in any breeding programs or at least to date, has no recorded offspring , with the exception of a pink sport, may mean this particular rose is the result of a virus and maybe it won't pass it along the striped trait through sexual reproduction following Ralph Moors trajectory exactly but..........http://www.rosebreeders.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20475&start=30

Rebekah ...

Thanks for sharing the RHF thread. I used to lurk there all of the time, but haven't visited that forum for a while.

Most of the striped roses I have grown were bred by Moore. Overall, I don't think they lack vigor, except for a few. Of course, that can be said of any group of roses with one prominent characteristic ... there are always exceptions ... Smiling

I've given away most of the striped roses that I had in my garden and am now down to just two. Having fewer striped roses really makes those two stand out more.

Good luck with your breeding for stripes.

Thanks for the links you two. I hadn’t ever looked for that topic on RHA and although I had previously read PB’s article, I had forgotten about it. Made for quite interesting reading!

Personally, I haven’t done any crosses with my striped roses yet but have collected a few specifically with that in mind. Maybe next season?
