I thought about egg yolk, bud didn't try it. She's still with me, but not eating on her own. She will drink on her own though, and she's standing and moving around. I'll have to try the egg yolk. I don't have any yogurt so maybe a bit of milk would work.

I almost had a tragedy here. I woke up during the night and looked at the alarm clock. It read 1:25, but it was flashing which means that the power was out. Just then the Regulator wind up clock struck 2:00. I panicked thinking that the power must have been off for a half hour or so. With 20 degree weather that would mean certain problems in the brooder. I went out quickly to check on them, hoping that some were still alive, only to find them all OK, and the temperature in the brooder was where it needed to be. I guess it must have just been off for a very short time.

I did loose the weak little one after 3 days of struggling to save her. Then yesterday morning I found one of the other ones lying dead. I know that it's not unusual to loose some, but I sure had become bonded with that little sick one. So I was sure a happy camper when I found them all OK this morning. Sighing!

Hi everyone.

@tveguy3, I am so sorry to hear that. It must be hard losing two.

I moved this year's new chicks (supposed to all be pullets, but I already recognize one rooster) out of the brooders and into an empty coop. So far they are overwhelmed - standing in a group and staring. A poor source of entertainment!

It's hard to see those little tykes die, but it happens. The survivors are doing well, boy are they ever eating the food!

Determining the sex of a newly hatched baby chick is not 100% they tell me. I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to do that.

Most hatcheries guarantee 90% accuracy on all-pullet orders. In my experience they may as well promise 10% roosters.

They often will include a couple extras in the shipment to cover losses and any mistakes. I had two extras in my order.

Hi Everyone!

Here is my 4 week update on my chicks.

They are doing AWESOME! They are eating out of my hand, they are beginning to jump a lot, and more! I put my hand in the brooder and I said "Come here!" One of them came running to me and let me hold her! It was SO CUTE!!!! The others are kinda skittish, but that one has really started to bond with me!

Here is a picture of her!

I am thinking of naming them now!

Thats my update!

I'm so glad they're doing well, Jared, and that you're enjoying them. Cute photo! We named our chickens, but we didn't intend to eat any of them. I couldn't do it. We did love their fresh eggs!

My granddaughter names all my chickens, although I have to say I can't tell one from the other. I refer to them by color - the redheads, the blonde squad, and my huge white Brahma who has the rather odd name of Karen.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

Only a few of mine are named: Monocle - who lost one eye, Spur - a hen with, you guessed it, a spur, Glory: named by an egg customer, and a couple others mainly named by someone else so I can't remember their names.

I was always surprised by all the different personalities chickens have. We normally had about 10 at a time, and each one had a different and distinct personality.

It did, I still miss them, especially Lily, she was my favorite, a Speckled Sussex. She was so curious, reminds me of that photo Jared just posted with her head cocked sideways.

Some people find it hard to believe, but most chickens are very lovable and sweet. I had to qualify that, since we did have one that was a mean terrorist! I had to wear knee high boots to go in the pen with her.

Cute picture Jared. Suzanne, that's sad to loose them, and it's always the special ones it seems.
