The show was last weekend and I just got a chance to go through my pictures. I tried to catch the tags when I took the pictures but didn't always get it. When I did get it in the picture, I blew it up before making the pic smaller so I could read the ID. Some I could only read the first word or nothing at all.

The show is put on by the Cactus and Succulent club I belong to, it is affiliated with CICY (Centro de Investigación Cientifica de Yucatán) which is a university and research center for plant biology, natural resources, sustainable development, etc. It's well respected institution and their gardens are wonderful. The club I joined is mostly students, graduate students, instructors and researchers from CICY. They give great presentations on different cactus and succulents at every monthly meeting and there are sales and you can bring in plants for ID. It is in Spanish however many of the members speak English and help me with a word if I get stuck. This was the club's annual judged show and sale.

I'll start with some Agaves.

Agave filifera

Agave isthmensis
Thumb of 2011-11-30/extranjera/4149fb

Agave patonii I didn't really get in the picture how flat this one is, it hugs the ground.

Another unusual plant, all I could read from the tag was that it was entered in the Cactus Columnar group.

I'll start another post with the Haworthia's and end with one of the groups in the arrangement category (not sure of the actual title of this category).

It was a fun show. There were several Scout troops and young students attending. They had some displays set up in front to give an overview to the kids on cactus and succulents and there were demonstrations on bonsai and transplanting in another area.

These are all pictures from the sales tables. I have bought several small plants at meetings and I couldn't decide on anything so I only bought another ground orchid and a really nice book (one of the authors is a professor in our club) called Flora Ilustrada de la Península de Yucatán (Illustrated Flora of the Yucatan Peninsula) so now I have a reference book for local plants. If you see anything that I should get in these pictures, please tell me. I'm still learning and don't know enough to do more than sample.

Thank you ~ I did!

What a delightful H. viscosa. How on earth do they present it so dust free. Very perfect.

It would be hard for me not to leave without an assortment of new succulents from that sale.

Fabulous pictures, Jonna. I always admire Bishop's Mitre and all the Euphorbias and the Opuntias and Haworthias and, well, everything else. I would have left the show broke. Hilarious! You had great restraint. Green Grin!

Boy I just saw this thread. I am sitting here literally mouthwatering..... I need to get me one of those Euphorbia cylindrifolia, SOOOOO cool. But I too would probably have left near broke!
I have a wonderful blood-red Dyckia sitting on my desk here, sadly it belongs to the Botanical Garden but - it may have pups....

I think the one with the serrated edges that tempted you might possibly be a Pandanus, the leaves appear to be growing in the corkscrew pattern typical of this genus.
The third picture under 'major thorns' in your last post appear to be Pachypodium lamerei, those are actually pretty easy from seed. I love them and have about 10 but beware, they get big!
I wish there was a show like that here! We were talking with friends yesterday about the possibility of taking a trip to Merida in the future.... maybe it can coincide with this plant show, is it held regularly?

I thought those serrated edge plants might be pandanus. I have several variegated pandanus on my roof and I hesitated because I really don't need any more, they get HUGE. There are some next to the immigration office that are as tall as that 2 story colonial building (colonial means it has 18' to 20' ceilings in each floor). These seemed a little different, more of a twist.

Please let me know if you and your friends take a trip to Merida, I will be happy to meet you for dinner and can show you some of the botanical gardens. CICY also sponsers a garden and the succulent club which has its judged show every November, the meetings are monthly on the last Thursday of the month. November coincides with some wonderful weather here, days are in the 80s and nights in the 60s. Of course, Merida is central for visits to some of the finest Mayan sites, Chichen Itza and Uxmal are day trips along with many other smaller sites. The colonial culture is wonderful, it is a very safe city, friendly and tropical.

The sale at the show was not huge but a lot of the people with ribbons on plants inside were selling small starts outside. I am trying to keep my collection under control or at least get everything else potted and set someplace more or less permanent before I buy more. Probably hopeless but I'm trying.

What a generous offer. Why didn't I know you when I lived in CA? Hilarious! Who knows, one of these days I just might make it out that way again.

Not Opuntia genus,
It is a species in Tephrocactus genus (belong to subfamily Opuntioideae, too).

Great information Justin, thank you. One of those pictured, that you identified as Astrophytum ornatum, came home with me and from your link I believe it is A. ornatum Meztitlan. It has barely grown in the last year and I'm relieved to see that it is normally a slow grower. I have it in half a coconut shell and it will be awhile before it needs anything larger. Thank you for identifying the ones without ID.
