I had the same experience of trying to grow them in the ground.
As far as the Roscoaea goes it's an interesting break from the more common species but it is not a great one for multiplying so far. It is not diminishing and what is there gets stronger year on year so maybe it is just slow to settle in.
These are not strictly speaking bulbs but they are all tuberous so that is close enough isn't it?
