Nothing like first-hand experience. Where I am habituating these days, is with a private home/small-scale wholesale nursery. Boy am I getting an education about the nursery business. Most of the chain retail nurseries and garden centers replace grower labels with their own labels, so the purported good-faith disclosure of the true cultivar on the back of the cartoonish chick-charm label becomes fantasy. Yesterday bought Semp calcareum 'Mrs Giuseppi' form a nursery for $4, a natural calcareum selection made and named in the 1930s by its founder Dr. Giuseppi, yet one that has been rebranded by Chris Hanson as Chick Charm Mint Marvel and offered at ~$8. I stand by all of my characterizations of this sad business exploitation, even though condemned by others in support of chick charms. I will never call this plant Mint Marvel, as the concept or rebranding plants, including rebranding species, is ludicrous. Stand strong.

Being a newbie to this forum, it's not my intent or desire to antagonize anyone, let alone a moderator, nationally known authority on semp cultivars and names, as well as one of the prime keepers of the semp DB, and last but not least someone whom I have found to be genuinely, kind and welcoming to any and all.

@valleylynn Your above statement, along with Chris' statement regarding the true cultivar names on the backs of all tags is untrue. Your reiterating of this claim does not make it any less untrue. The following photos are of C.C. tags. You will have to take my word regarding the C.C. names on the front of the tags, as I have not developed the skills to photo both sides of a tag simultaneously.

Semp Reinhardt aka C.C. "Appletini" It's pretty clear there is not original cultivar name on the back of this tag.

If it hadn't been for my fortuitous serendipity of finding this forum, and this thread in particular, I would have been left to believe these might be patented cultivars, they are not. They are rebranded, trademark names.

"Ask before buying."

My wife gifted me with my first Chick Charms as she saw them at a "Big Box" store and thought I might like to have them. At her urging I went and looked for myself and saw several more that I liked, not because of some cutesy name, but because I thought them attractive, in good health and on sale for less than half the original retail. The cutesy name had no bearing whatsoever on my purchase. I would have bought C.C. "Appletini" if it had been labeled Semp. Reinhardt. I actually think "Prairie Sunset" a more attractive name than Plum Parfait, the same is true of a very well known cultivar in "Director Jacobs." Even though I'm somewhat of an experienced horticulturalist, it never occurred to me to look on the backs of tags for the true named cultivar. Chris' claim of wanting to bring in more people to the hobby and proposing that his cutesy renaming as enticement is bogus at best.
As Chris was not at the "Big Box" store, who was I supposed to ask?

As a backyard gardener, I've been known to take cuttings from various plants in our landscape. Some varieties are patented cultivars that I can't under any circumstances propagate as it would be patent infringement. Others are rebranded known cultivars with trademarked names. I can propagate and resell these BUT I CAN'T use the trademarked name, I can only sell them as the original cultivar. This rebranding is exactly what Chris has done. The average hobbyist would most likely not know to look at the back of the tag for the true name. A child, new to the hobby would not know this.

The following is just my opinion. Lynn although it may offend you, I feel you're defending the indefensible. Had I, like you have, committed much of my life to keeping the true cultivar names correctly identified, I would not welcome someone who in order to create a brand, renaming known cultivars, and muddying the waters of my life's work. You enjoy a hard won reputation as an authority. You breathe the rarefied air of working with giants like Kevin Vaughn, something most of us will never be able to do. You're invited into the inner sanctums of big named growers, to evaluate, correctly identify named cultivars so they don't sell NoIDs that are incorrectly named. Yet, in spite of all of this, you defend Chick Charms. Years from now these will appear on benches at nurseries, greenhouses, and pop up garden centers at "Big Box" stores being sold under incorrect names. People will buy them believing they have a new, named cultivar to add to their collection. Meanwhile they might very well have the true named cultivar sitting right beside it in their garden.

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing BigT, thank you for gifting me my laugh for the day. You are awesome. Group hug
1.True, I am the moderator for this forum along with golfinch4 (Chris), and so enjoy all the people here, it is an amazing group of semp lovers.

2. Not so true, "Nationally known authority on semp cultivars and names." We all learn every day, hopefully we never stop that process, not sure that would make me an authority. That is what makes this community so awesome, we all work together towards researching suspect semps. And you are now part of this wonderful community. Hurray!

3. Kinda true about the semp database. I had started the database for semps on my site at Cubits.org. When Dave created this wonderful site I was given the opportunity to move the database here to All Things Plants / NGA.
I knew for the benefit of our much loved sempervivum that it would bring growth and knowledge of these amazing plants to make the move. Voila, here we are today. Thank you Dave Whitinger (@dave). You rock.
And just look at how it has grown. Hurray!

Wow, great photos BigT. Out of all the nurseries I have dealt with that carry the Chick Charms® that is the first tags I've seen without the original name of the back of the tag. Confused What was the name of the store your wife bought them from?
This is what the back of the tag should look like, using Mark's photo from an above post.

I'm glad you got a good laugh Lynn. Although from all I've been reading of your exploits throughout the forum threads, your being humble and modest. Smiling

All were bought, by my wife and I at Walmart. That's where the strawberry pot NoIDs came from too. All of them in our area had lot's of C.C. semps. I have a few varieties with tags that have the original cultivar on the back. TBH If not for this forum and thread I may never have known to look at the backs of the tags.

I would love to be able to attend one of Kevin's clinics. I did watch the 4 part series with him. He's probably forgotten more than I'll ever know. Hearing of some of his experiences reminded me of a grower I worked for at an exotic plants greenhouse in Milwaukee. You reminded me of him also. Everyday he would ask me, "What did you learn today?" The first time he asked me, I was taken aback, not fully understanding what he asked. He explained, "You should learn something new every day. When you stop learning, you die. Perhaps not physically, but spiritually, emotionally." From that day on, we each asked the question of the other. It wouldn't take much for me to be bitten by the hybridizing bug. As it is I have some NoID flowers that appear to have set seed. I was considering dusting a tub or two and see what develops. If nothing else it will give me some experience growing semps from seed.

Thanks again for all your kindness Lynn. I tip my hat to you.

@plantmanager is still on garden.org, maybe they forgot about the semp forum, or not much as gone on with their semps.

"For a year I had over 500 sempervivums. I think I'm down to 2 now. The deer and squirrels got most of them. I can't stand to have everything caged!"

Karen is still quite active in many forums. I speak with her often. It is sad that her semps all got eaten. It never feels right when dozens or more plants are killed under your care. Even if it's not your fault—as I assume what happened wasn't Karen's fault—it still doesn't feel good.
