That's what happened to me last year. Between the two-legged beasts and the four-legged ones I barely got a sandwich's worth of tomatoes! This year I've had pretty good results with a critter deterrent and a word to my next door neighbor that I haven't given permission for anyone to be in my garden we are finally getting somewhere.
So sorry about your plants. Maddening, isn't it?

I wish they would come help there themselves.. but they wouldn't

Hope you catch the culprit. Did they eat the plants to the ground?

I'm sorry Allison. How disappointing. And maddening.

How about deer? They have eaten my tomatoes in past years. The plants were around 5' tall, they trimmed them down to about 2 or 3'

hhhmmm haven't thought about them.. but I guess they could prop themselves up on my rock wall and eat away from down bottom... I didn't see much damage around the area and plants are everywhere.. but that could be it

I still have deer tracks and poo in the yard but so far they've stayed out of the veggie garden. I used a granular product that is supposed to keep lots of furry varmits out. So far, so good. I seems to have worked for everything except the squirrels. They haven't eaten anything but tended to dig up baby plants in the beginning.
Last year the deer had a fine old time in the veggie garden. Ate the hot peppers first. The damage looked like that...eaten from the top down with a bit of stem left standing.

Maybe it's just coincidence but when we cover our 'maters with bird netting (to keep the birds from eating the ripe fruit), the deer have left them alone too. Or maybe the deer just don't want to eat plants wrapped in net?

they just got big enough and I put the cages over them a few days before.. the stakes I had were not enough anymore.. worth trying the netting.. I chased a bunny off the lawn this morning.. think he would eat that?

Probably but I don't know. We also have a chicken wire fence around the tomatoes.

I checked my tomatoes again. Some plants have some fruit, some have none. Some have a lot of blossoms. But overall, it doesn't look like they're setting a lot of fruit. Sad

Karen have you figured out why they are not setting fruit? Is it still raining in your neck of the woods?

Most of my plants are huge, getting lots of blossoms, but not much fruit, either. I'm thinking it's too warm perhaps? It's been in the 90s (yesterday was 109 heat index) for way too many days this early in the season.

Bev-after all of that rain we got, our fortunes have reveresed, and now we're dry as a bone. (I'm pretty close to Karen, so our weather is pretty similar). I fear it's going to be a dismal tomato harvest this year.

Same weather as Linda here. Temps in the 90s the past week or so, heat index as high as 115, and no rain. Some plants do have lots of blossoms, so maybe I'll get lots of fruit. It just seems that I usually have more fruit set by mid July.

We had temps near 100 today, goodness...I don't even want to think about what the heat index was. The air conditioner is still running even at this late hour. It's still 81. Think I'll have to run the water tomorrow.
Nothing worse than anticipating lots of veggies and then getting shut out. I didn't even want to think about having a repeat of last year. Hopefully you'll get a later than usual harvest, Karen.

I now need to get out and figure out which types are coming in and which I like best. I did mark them all but the danged tags are way down under the plants. Next year I swear I'm making a map of what is where. For sure the ones in the back are the heirlooms 'cause I garden near the street and I wanted those further from grabby hands, lol! Guess I'm going to have to crawl under there and see. At least I'm able to identify a few...Tigerella, Black Cherry, and Dr. Wyche's Yellow are easy, right?

my plastic cage that was holding up my cherry tomato snapped in the storm last night... guess 2 years use was too much for the cheapo thing Thumbs down was wondering why Lily was not coming in this morning.. checking for good ones.. real bad news is it took out my container of glads & knocked down another flower container... I am assuming the 2nd will be fine.. picked up and cut off any broken just now flowering glads and put them in a vase Sad
