When did you sow them, Barbara?

They were sown March 1, along with 14 other types from the same vendor. Most others were up within a few days to a week. Laura Bush was slower, but is showing a few sprouts. All were sown in rows in the same flat, so same conditions.

Boy, that is slow. But you'll most likely never have to sow Laura Bush again- it self sows like crazy.

Great instructions for us newbies to petunias. Thanks Joanne.

Karen...only 3 of about 15 of the Laura seeds germinated. At temps down to minus 50 in the winter, I doubt there will be any tunia re-seeds coming up here Rolling on the floor laughing
No orange ever came up (was curious if orange was really orange as I'd hoped) and NONE of the Dolicissima Firenze's germinated. Going to replant the rest of those today for a second try. They are pelleted.

Give them time, Barbara.

And it was my understanding that a seed only knows it's frozen. Twenty above or twenty below zero is the same to a seed- just frozen is frozen.

Barbara: Did any of your Firenze ever germinate? I"m probably close to 3 weeks, and zero germination on mine. Two other varieties have been up for over a week. At least one other variety was pelleted seed. Not sure what the problem might be.

Can't remember how many seeds I had, but zero germination on the first Dolissima Firenze planting. Planted the rest about a week and a half ago and think I have one maybe coming up. Germination on the Dolissima Fragolino was equally poor and came from a totally different source....Never did get any germination on my Aladdin orange petunia seeds, either.

Last year I had near 100% germination on petunias and wondered what the talk was about the difficulty germinating them. I had a ridiculous number of petunias and way too early. This year, I planted later and purposely planned for the same number of plants that I had last year. I wanted my baskets as floriforous as Joanne's and of course this year they are very slow and not germinating...go figure...???

Mine are slow too. We have had a lot of overcast days and combined with the bubblewrap lining in the greenhouse, the petunias are just now starting to grow a bit. I think I will transplant them into 2" pots and better soil on Monday. I removed most of the BW a couple of days ago to allow for more sun.

I sowed just a 6 pack of Tidal Waves under lights a few weeks ago. Only 5 sprouted and they're just sitting there looking stupid. Not growing, only one true leaf.

I wintersowed a jug of shock wave seeds (commercial) from last year. They're just germinating now. I have about 6 teeny, tiny seedlings in a jug.

Allison, they do start slowly when wintersown, but mine usually start blooming by late June.

These are wintersown Laura Bush last year, planted out in morning sun only. Picture was taken June 15.

This was a patch of volunteer Laura Bush, picture taken on June 2. I'm afraid to see the volunteers this year...

Karen, Your comment about the seeds just sitting there looking stupid made me spit out my coffee Rolling on the floor laughing . That's verbatim something I would say Rolling on the floor laughing

Back several posts, regarding the Laura's re-seeding. I too have been taught that frozen is frozen. What gets frozen things up here is not just the temp, but the duration at those temps. We'll get our first hard freeze late September and can potentially stay that way till mid-May. Then, january through February with temps normally never over 40 below is pretty traumatic, even with adequate snow cover. Things get desiccated/freeze dried. Best way to explain is to compare to ice cubes in your freezer. They are frozen regardless of the temp, but left in there over time, the moisture disappears and they shrink down to nothing or even disappear in the tray.
