Hi Crystal... welcome to gardenings mini world here... you'll have plenty of great ideas .. and some help if you need it ... and we're always looking to see and learn new projects and techniques ourselves..
from what I know of the others here...also mad crazy project folks... you'll have fun... and feel right at home... a mini fairy water garden sounds like quite an advanced project... difficulty index of 8.6... please show us the way...
I'm doing a spring make over of everything inside and out myself.. kind of a celebratory revamping... so I well understand having plenty to do... and I too.. am tired of the winter weather.. the first day of spring and I think I saw snow a 1/2 dozen times... maybe 60-80 flakes each time.. and spent it outside working in two gardens.. it was too cold to enjoy it too much...
I did see the strangest thing though.. in a neghboring garden to one I was in... there was a bunch of guys working laying pavers and in flower beds... but the strangest thing was they had already installed maybe maybe 100 ft of 8' tall fence..horozontal reverse board.. unusual and nice... and they had a guy sandind the new boards of the fence.. inside and out/ all day long... I couldn't imagine.. he was sanding all day yesterday also... but I thought someone was sanding their floors... and it never let up... but today I saw him

Why would one install an 8' tall fence on a roof garden?
To keep the deer and wild critters out?? Big Grin

Seriously, Gordon, why would that be done?

Sharon.. i was on a friends roof... installing a metal containment fence against a metal fence that had large spacing in it... last year I'd streached a bunch of plastic deer fencing upon it.. and this Beddington terrier had clawed his way through.. and escaped to a neighbors roof... now the new metal will keep this young lad contained.. the 8' tall fence was in the backyard of a building two doors over and behind her 2nd floor roof.. still a bit large considering with horizontal reverse wood slats.. the entire fence was a ladder... so it wasn't people they were excluding..maybe they were escaping a fire ..and over the fence.. with that design.. the main purpose of reverse boarding is to let some wind trough to minimise pancaking of the plants behind it.. with the wind hitting the fence and coming down from above.. but where they were they don't get any wind.. guess it was to provide some draft in a low sheltered area... got me.. Shrug!
the wood was a soft pinkish color after sanding.. perhaps a redwood or cedar .. but why sand it.... before staining..ok..an even coat of stain.. like you'd like to see on some fine woodwork...

Thanks, Gordon. Obviously I've never been on or in a rooftop garden.

i am a serious planner i plan and research tons before i ever start anything . so my mini water fairy garden was my winter researching project . since the weather has been crappy i put in many hours on getting it planned out . ponds and water gardens are easy so i figure why not combine them into a small city with a river threw it . i had mini ponds as well as a large 900 gallon one . i left all of those behind and only have a small precast water feature on my porch that i did decide to keep and bring along . no telling how many ponds or water features i will end up with before summer is over . nothing brings me joy as much as the sights and sounds of water in a yard . my old place was 150 acres with a huge creek running around the edge of the property and i always loved to hear it flowing along . this is the first time since i was 10 that i won't have that view and sound to enjoy . everytime i would build a pond it would get over run with frogs looking for a place to mate and my kids would catch small fish from the creek to put in it . i spent many hours on my porch just enjoying all of the wildlife that came to hang out for a spell . i will post a couple pics so yall can see what i am missing .. we moved in october so i had to just dream about all the fun of designing our yard instead of doing . but we finally got 2 good warm saturdays and got some things started out there . built the foundation last weekend for my 6x8 hobby greenhouse but the wind kept us from doing any more on building it . Crying so until it warms back up and the wind slows up i am stuck inside building mini's for my fairy creek which the creek i moved away from is the inspiration . i saw in another post that some of yall like working with polymer . i love playing in it as well . i have never tried putting it outside but after reading up know i know you can as well as which brands are the less porous and better suited for outdoor use . however i am wondering if i can take it a step farther and dip my mini's in resin to protect them even more . so i will plan on trying that in the next few days and let you know my results . resin is easy to work with but you must work fast .. i mold jewelry from it as well so i will set my molds up so that after i dip my mini's i can pour the left over into my molds and not waste any . if any of yall use resin i have found out you get a better deal buying by the gallon in the flooring dept at lowe's or home depot . as promised here are a few pics of the creek where i lived , one of my small ponds i left behind , as well as a few of my polymer creations , a cedar wagon i built from scrap wood and a garden ball i made .Thumb of 2013-03-22/RainRabbit/0d72c0

I for one am quite impressed... keep up the good work... so full of fancy...
I've been thinking of an inside water fall ... maybe just dribbling over rocks starting at 12' ceiling height .. and running over rocks to a small catchment pond on the floor...any suggestions...

I can see why it was hard to move. What beautiful scenery. Love all your creations too! Is the dragon made from polymer clay also?

Thanks yall *Blush* yes the dragon is polymer . i started out with aluminum foil to get the basic shape then put green clay over it and shaped it , then made canes for the scales out of 3 colors in a teardrop shape then sliced it very thin ( took forever ) . his eyes are glass beads . i made his wings with a very thin wire for the frame then mod podge tissue paper over the wire frame . Gordon lowes carries a very light weight fake rock siding in the roofing and siding dept that would work nicely for that and is easily cut . of course you will need a big rubber liner and you could build a simple box lined with rubber liner for the catchment and put the fake rock on the sides of it as well . i have a friend that does roofing and i get all of my pond liners from him for free . when he has extras from doing rubber flat roof's . you could go wider at the top than the bottom and have a few sticking out here and there to get nice sound and look like a waterfall trickling over a cliff . then just adjust your pump to the right amount of pressure so that water doesn't spatter everywhere . make sure when you buy your pump you get one that will pump the right height for your waterfall . all waterfall pumps have on the package the height they will pump.

Well...Crystal... great ideas for my interior water feature...my thoughts and MO as well... you certainly get my certification for knowing what's up... my only addition is to put a backing board between the rubber and the fake stone.. so the stone adhears to a backing as well as being stacked upon one another for the 12' build up... and it will also help the ponds strength and allow the stone to be used inside and outside of the pond..... much like the way I did my bathroom sink/trough...[support... rubber membrane..backing board.. stone ] ... If you just came aboard you might have missed my general roof garden interview tour... posted a few weeks ago...

I've a small pond there ... with a small water flow and a fogger.. underwater LED lights changing color.....
keep up your great work....... It took forever... Hilarious! I agree Hilarious! but then.... it keeps the faint of heart buying off the shelf..Thumb of 2013-03-22/GordonHawk/4f0d3e

you will need to build a rectangle box to go up the wall and line it with a rubber liner there are several ways to attach the fake stone but construction adhesive is my go to on anything hard to do that you want to stay and not fall off . liquid nail cant be beat . i think they make another version of it for masonry as well . but the regular works with pretty much anything . here is the fake rock i am talking about Thumb of 2013-03-22/RainRabbit/8896e9

love the interview thank you for posting it vicki . such a beautiful relaxing rooftop retreat . it makes me wish i lived closer so i could come show you the best ways to go about your indoor water feature . i have pretty much any woodworking tool there is . so i am sure i could have you going in no time . just curious if any of you have ever used expanding spray foam ? it makes awesome fake rock as well as fake tree's and limbs . and can be water proofed or covered with cement , quickwall or hypertufa .

gordon i think i may have found a beautiful idea for your indoor water feature . i was strolling through random pics and found this . Thumb of 2013-03-26/RainRabbit/3b1389

you could easily waterproof the wall behind it with a tile back drop , but i would use something other than a wash tub for the catchment . the rain chains you make would be fabulous with this . Smiling
