Wow, look at how far those peonies are up. It has been a very unusual March here. You know, we'll see a day or two out of range, but two weeks? I can count the buds on a couple tree peonies already. I hope it stays fairly mild, for the sake of plant life. I'd hate to see it get down to the teens after this.

That said, what a beautiful sight you have there!

Very nice, Jerry! Hopefully we'll have a banner year for peonies. We'll see.

This is a noid pink single. Second pic is from same clump May 8, 11. 80+ today but rain and cooler temp coming.




We seem to be nearly a month early this year.

Yeah, we sure are a month ahead. Let's hope winter doesn't decide to make a return.

Early Scout

Yeah, my Roselette is getting some size to her too. ;) Those are nice clumps.

Early Scout on March 31 pm. By far, the first regular peony to bloom but it is a FL hybrid which gives it its early awakening.

Very nice.

Wanted to get a shot of 'Roselette' breaking open before tomorrow's rain. Planted in '10.

Roselette bloomed a few more today. The lighting is not ideal but the basic plant is pictured.

Very nice, Jerry!! We got hit with a freeze last night. Most all of my plants are looking sad this morning. I hope they perk up during the day...

We hit 39 last night with frost on the roofs. Peonies don't seem to care unless it freezes. I have a lot of irises with buds about to open so the cold will slow them down.

Yeah, it got down to 30F or 29F at my place.

We are expecting 2 consecutive night of possible freezing. Could be a bummer after all the anticipation. Just showing 2 since they all are at about the same stage. The one with the red stems and buds is supposed to be 'Emile Debatene' but from Lowe's who knows. For $4.98 I will not complain.

Jerry and Diann - Hope all your peonies bounce back OK.

The good and bad about California and peonies - some winters may not get cold enough for optimum peony blooms, but we never have to worry about freezing when the blooms start in mid-April.

We bottomed out at about 34.5 according to my thermometer. I have a few roses with baby leaves and they appeared to be ok. No visible damage to my peonies or irises. Tonight may be a bit warmer. We have temperature gradients about every 50 miles here so it is difficult to predict within a few degrees. Farmers to the north of here jumped the gun and planted corn in mid March and they are probably holding their breath now.
