Thanks everyone for the compliments on the spring bulb display. Green Grin!

Jo Ann, what a lot of work you have there covering up your lilies against the frost. Looks like you did a good job though.

Marilyn, the tulips shown in the backyard shots are of my darwin mix that I bought from Brent and Beckies. So I don't have IDs on any specific tulip in the mix there. Just know they are all darwins. Came back pretty well as this is their second spring although I did have more bloom in year one. Sory, no IDS on those daffs either just bought them from Brent and Beckies but did not keep tags of what was planted where on some of the varieties out front.

Tamara the 700 tulips ordered so far at Colorblends are only the begining. I am also going to be ordering at Scheepers and Brent and Beckies. So the bulb totals will be going up much, much higher than that. I did figgure out how the majority of the tulips will be planted. Dig trench, place bulbs in trench and cover up trench. Gets lots of bulbs planted rather quickly.

Here is that small leafed rhodo blooming today-

Some of the serviceberries have started blooming. I love their small pretty white flowers but that is not why they are here. They were planted as shrubs to provide summer fruit for the backyard songbirds to eat.

Beautiful, Rita. Those service berries look huge.

Jo Ann, I like Firefox, and spell check is good. It doesn't know plant names but good for most else.

I guess it is the angle of the shot. They are only between 6-7 feet tall. That fence you can see in the backround is my back neighbors fence.

Rita, what kinda Service Berries are those, I have two Regent Saskatoon they are not doing too well, a vine keeps choking them and I cannot keep up with it. The birds love the few berries that I get. They are beautiful. The Rodo, is a small leaf? I only see the big leaved ones around here and they don't bloom that long just basically a very large leaf bush, no berries or anything. Sad

Yes, that is one of the small leafed rhodos I bought at Home Depot a few years ago. Don't have the tag though sorry. I just picked it as it was in bloom and so pretty. Of course much smaller then!

Those pictured Serviceberries are called Northern Juneberries that I got as 3 inch high plants from Okios Tree corp about 9 years ago. I also have REGENT shrub serviceberries and I really recommend those if you can find them. Regent are extemely heavy fruiting. The flowers on my regents are not quite open yet.

Yes, I have two Regent's, a silly vine keeps choking it and I need to be more aggressive. Do the small leaf rodo's bloom longer, I know the flowers are prettier. Lovey dubby

I think they have the same blooming length as other rhodos. But not sure. I only have a few small leafed ones and no regular ones.

I know I am always talking about the multi level property here. My main gardens in my backyard are litterally upstairs. Here are two shots to help you get the idea.

Here is an example of how I plot my bulb planting. Going to use the raised bed in the backyard I call the daylily plateau or just the plateau. It really looks smashing in the summer when the daylilies bloom. Plus up on the top section over the plateau in that smaller raised bed section directly next to the garage (my backyard neighbors garage) I plant zinnias and that gives me summerlong color. So for years I have been content with that but now I am working on my spring bulb plans. Honestly, afew tulips can be squeezed in just about anywhere. They don't multiply (in fact the opposite they decrease in volume year after year) so unlike daffs you don't need to worry about possible overcrowding and dividing.

The plateau is four rows of daylilies, two more in front and two more towards the back with a path in between the front and back sections going accross. So here is what I am going to do.

The 50 Come back tulips just ordered from Brent&Beckies are going in amoung the two back rows of daylilies. Those are red darwin tulips. Then 50 Jenny also just ordered from Brent&Beckies are going in amoung the front two daylily rows. Those are golden yellow early tulips. Then still to order from Scheepers is 200 of their Princely Single Early Tulip Mixture which will be planted thickly in the pathway between the front and back daylily section rows. Then at each end in the front curve I need some small bulbs to fill in like crocus or some sort of rock garden iris. All still thinking on that and it would not be lots of bulbs anyway.

The top terrace next to the garage needs to have the sections of daffodil row where there are no bulbs fixed and patched. I have picked out daffs to add there. In back of the back row of daffs will go a row of Dutch Iris, which will be blooming much later than the daffs so no conflict just another wave of bloom. Then I need to figgure out what tulips to add to the mid section between daff rows but haven't decided on a plan yet.

But this is how I plot things. Pictures of the Plateau now with no spring color!

That's a good looking yard, Rita!

I have levels, too - most to be further developed later....

The front of my house, about 15 feet from the street, 5 feet of which is sidewalk, is 2 story.
The back is 3 stories from ground level. The back door is from the basement.
and then there are stairs down to the backyard (welcome to Pittsburgh!) which probably slopes down 2, maybe 3 more stories until the back fence just about 30 feet back from the house.
I DO plan terraces, but they are for my self sufficiency VEGETABLE garden, fenced in and all. - hafta wait for those funds to show themselves!

But my veg garden will be about 10 feet across and 6 terraces down. OH don't I wish I had it now!

These days I only grow my own tomatoes and cucumbers. Many years ago (like 20) I used to have a much larger veggie garden and grow lots more tomatoes than now as well as cucumbers, peppers, beets, string beans (pole beans), broccolli, peas, strawberries and more.
